耶稣沿着加利利湖边行走的时候，看见被称为彼得的西门和安得烈两兄弟正在撒网打鱼，他们是渔夫。耶稣对他们说：“来跟从我！我要使你们成为得人的渔夫。”他们立刻撇下渔网，跟从了耶稣。耶稣再往前走，又看见雅各和约翰两兄弟正和父亲西庇太一起在船上补渔网。耶稣呼召他们，他们马上离开渔船，辞别父亲，跟从了耶稣。

听见约翰的话后跟从耶稣的两个人中，有一个是西门·彼得的弟弟安得烈。他首先去找他哥哥西门，说：“我们找到弥赛亚了！”弥赛亚的意思是基督。他带着西门去见耶稣。耶稣看着西门，对他说：“约翰的儿子西门，你要改名为矶法。”矶法的意思是彼得。

另外一个门徒——西门·彼得的弟弟安得烈对耶稣说：

他们是：西门——耶稣给他取名叫彼得、西门的兄弟安得烈、雅各、约翰、腓力、巴多罗买、

一天，耶稣站在革尼撒勒湖边，众人团团围着祂，要听上帝的道。祂看见湖边停着两条船，渔夫离了船正在洗网，就上了西门的那条船，请西门把船稍微划离岸边，然后坐在船上教导众人。耶稣讲完之后对西门说：“把船划到水深的地方去撒网捕鱼。”西门说：“老师，我们劳碌了一整夜，一无所获，但既然你这样吩咐，我就照你的话做。”他们把网撒下去，果然捕获很多鱼，差点把网撑破了，于是招呼另一条船上的同伴来帮忙。他们一起把两条船都装满了鱼，船几乎要沉下去了。西门·彼得见状，便跪倒在耶稣膝前说：“主啊，离开我，我是个罪人！”他和所有同伴们对捕到这么多鱼感到非常惊讶，包括西庇太的两个儿子雅各和约翰。耶稣对西门说：“不要怕，从今以后，你将成为得人的渔夫。”于是他们把船靠岸后，撇下一切跟从了耶稣。

安得烈、腓力、巴多罗买、马太、多马、亚勒腓的儿子雅各、达太、激进党人西门、

他们进城后，来到楼上自己住的房间。当时有彼得、约翰、雅各、安得烈、腓力、多马、巴多罗买、马太、亚勒腓的儿子雅各、激进党人西门、雅各的儿子犹大。
