When he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.

He came and proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners;to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of our God’s vengeance; to comfort all who mourn,to provide for those who mourn in Zion; to give them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, festive oil instead of mourning, and splendid clothes instead of despair. And they will be called righteous trees, planted by the LORD to glorify him.

Jesus continued going around to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness.

Herod added this to everything else— he locked up John in prison.

“ This is John the Baptist,” he told his servants.“ He has been raised from the dead, and that’s why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

Afterward he was traveling from one town and village to another, preaching and telling the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him,

But he said to them,“ It is necessary for me to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because I was sent for this purpose.”And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written:The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed,to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Now when John heard in prison what the Christ was doing, he sent a message through his disciples

“ And now I know that none of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will ever see me again.

After this, Jesus and his disciples went to the Judean countryside, where he spent time with them and baptized.John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water there. People were coming and being baptized,since John had not yet been thrown into prison.

After arranging a day with him, many came to him at his lodging. From dawn to dusk he expounded and testified about the kingdom of God. He tried to persuade them about Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets.
