The people of Jerusalem say,“ Don’t laugh when we suffer, you enemies of ours! We have fallen. But we’ll get up. Even though we sit in the dark, the Lord will give us light.

Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me.

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said,“ I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.

Light shines in the darkness for the godly. They are generous, compassionate, and righteous.

The Lord is my light and my salvation— so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?

For God, who said,“ Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.

Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery.They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High.That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them.“ Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains.Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.

“ In that day I will restore the fallen house of David. I will repair its damaged walls. From the ruins I will rebuild it and restore its former glory.

Then my enemies will see that the Lord is on my side. They will be ashamed that they taunted me, saying,“ So where is the Lord— that God of yours?” With my own eyes I will see their downfall; they will be trampled like mud in the streets.

The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall; don’t be happy when they stumble.For the Lord will be displeased with you and will turn his anger away from them.

I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.

“ You should not have gloated when they exiled your relatives to distant lands. You should not have rejoiced when the people of Judah suffered such misfortune. You should not have spoken arrogantly in that terrible time of trouble.

“ But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.

And there will be no night there— no need for lamps or sun— for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever.

“ You rejoice and are glad, you who plundered my chosen people. You frisk about like a calf in a meadow and neigh like a stallion.

The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers.

I prayed,“ Don’t let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall.”

Light shines on the godly, and joy on those whose hearts are right.

Lord, have mercy on me. Make me well again, so I can pay them back!I know you are pleased with me, for you have not let my enemies triumph over me.You have preserved my life because I am innocent; you have brought me into your presence forever.

“ Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you.Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you.All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance.

“ Have I ever rejoiced when disaster struck my enemies, or become excited when harm came their way?

You rejoiced at the desolation of Israel’s territory. Now I will rejoice at yours! You will be wiped out, you people of Mount Seir and all who live in Edom! Then you will know that I am the Lord.

“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you clapped and danced and cheered with glee at the destruction of my people,

Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.

Don’t let my treacherous enemies rejoice over my defeat. Don’t let those who hate me without cause gloat over my sorrow.

Are you rejoicing in the land of Uz, O people of Edom? But you, too, must drink from the cup of the Lord’s anger. You, too, will be stripped naked in your drunkenness.O beautiful Jerusalem, your punishment will end; you will soon return from exile. But Edom, your punishment is just beginning; soon your many sins will be exposed.

to open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.’

I will say to the prisoners,‘ Come out in freedom,’ and to those in darkness,‘ Come into the light.’ They will be my sheep, grazing in green pastures and on hills that were previously bare.

“ No longer will you need the sun to shine by day, nor the moon to give its light by night, for the Lord your God will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.Your sun will never set; your moon will not go down. For the Lord will be your everlasting light. Your days of mourning will come to an end.

Declare me not guilty, O Lord my God, for you give justice. Don’t let my enemies laugh about me in my troubles.Don’t let them say,“ Look, we got what we wanted! Now we will eat him alive!”May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor.

But they are glad now that I am in trouble; they gleefully join together against me. I am attacked by people I don’t even know; they slander me constantly.They mock me and call me names; they snarl at me.

Don’t let my enemies gloat, saying,“ We have defeated him!” Don’t let them rejoice at my downfall.But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me.I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me.

Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.”

All the people who belong to this world will gloat over them and give presents to each other to celebrate the death of the two prophets who had tormented them.But after three and a half days, God breathed life into them, and they stood up! Terror struck all who were staring at them.Then a loud voice from heaven called to the two prophets,“ Come up here!” And they rose to heaven in a cloud as their enemies watched.

Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us,to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.”

And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.

Who among you fears the Lord and obeys his servant? If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God.
