Fear the Lord if you are wise! His voice calls to everyone in Jerusalem:“ The armies of destruction are coming; the Lord is sending them.

The voice of Jehovah crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom will see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.

The voice of Yahweh calls out to the city( and it is wise to fear Your name):“ Pay attention to the rod and the One who ordained it.

Listen! The LORD is calling to the city! It is wise to respect your authority, O LORD! Listen, O nation, and those assembled in the city!

Yahweh’s voice calls to the city, and wisdom sees your name:“ Listen to the rod, and he who appointed it.

She has not obeyed His voice, She has not received correction; She has not trusted in the Lord, She has not drawn near to her God.

Behold, the name of the Lord comes from afar, Burning with His anger, And His burden is heavy; His lips are full of indignation, And His tongue like a devouring fire.

“ Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger And the staff in whose hand is My indignation.I will send him against an ungodly nation, And against the people of My wrath I will give him charge, To seize the spoil, to take the prey, And to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.

But I will send a fire upon Judah, And it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.”

Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, that he tore his clothes.Then the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Achbor the son of Michaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king, saying,“ Go, inquire of the Lord for me, for the people and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that is aroused against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe.( She dwelt in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter.) And they spoke with her.Then she said to them,“ Thus says the Lord God of Israel,‘ Tell the man who sent you to Me,“ Thus says the Lord:‘ Behold, I will bring calamity on this place and on its inhabitants— all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read—because they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. Therefore My wrath shall be aroused against this place and shall not be quenched.’”’But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, in this manner you shall speak to him,‘ Thus says the Lord God of Israel:“ Concerning the words which you have heard—because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they would become a desolation and a curse, and you tore your clothes and wept before Me, I also have heard you,” says the Lord.“ Surely, therefore, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the calamity which I will bring on this place.”’” So they brought back word to the king.

And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city, and take it and burn it with fire.”’Thus says the Lord:‘ Do not deceive yourselves, saying,“ The Chaldeans will surely depart from us,” for they will not depart.For though you had defeated the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only wounded men among them, they would rise up, every man in his tent, and burn the city with fire.’”

The sound of noise from the city! A voice from the temple! The voice of the Lord, Who fully repays His enemies!

The city of confusion is broken down; Every house is shut up, so that none may go in.There is a cry for wine in the streets, All joy is darkened, The mirth of the land is gone.In the city desolation is left, And the gate is stricken with destruction.

If I go out to the field, Then behold, those slain with the sword! And if I enter the city, Then behold, those sick from famine! Yes, both prophet and priest go about in a land they do not know.’”Have You utterly rejected Judah? Has Your soul loathed Zion? Why have You stricken us so that there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but there was no good; And for the time of healing, and there was trouble.We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickedness And the iniquity of our fathers, For we have sinned against You.Do not abhor us, for Your name’s sake; Do not disgrace the throne of Your glory. Remember, do not break Your covenant with us.Are there any among the idols of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are You not He, O Lord our God? Therefore we will wait for You, Since You have made all these.

and say to them,‘ Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, which cannot be made whole again; and they shall bury them in Tophet till there is no place to bury.Thus I will do to this place,” says the Lord,“ and to its inhabitants, and make this city like Tophet.And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled like the place of Tophet, because of all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven, and poured out drink offerings to other gods.”’”

“ Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying,‘ Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Zion shall be plowed like a field, Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins, And the mountain of the temple Like the bare hills of the forest.”’

Who is wise? Let him understand these things. Who is prudent? Let him know them. For the ways of the Lord are right; The righteous walk in them, But transgressors stumble in them.

Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Consider your ways!“ You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Consider your ways!

That they may know that You, whose name alone is the Lord, Are the Most High over all the earth.

Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed like a field, Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins, And the mountain of the temple Like the bare hills of the forest.

Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord.And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed,“ The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

“ Also I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, And lack of bread in all your places; Yet you have not returned to Me,” Says the Lord.“ I also withheld rain from you, When there were still three months to the harvest. I made it rain on one city, I withheld rain from another city. One part was rained upon, And where it did not rain the part withered.So two or three cities wandered to another city to drink water, But they were not satisfied; Yet you have not returned to Me,” Says the Lord.“ I blasted you with blight and mildew. When your gardens increased, Your vineyards, Your fig trees, And your olive trees, The locust devoured them; Yet you have not returned to Me,” Says the Lord.“ I sent among you a plague after the manner of Egypt; Your young men I killed with a sword, Along with your captive horses; I made the stench of your camps come up into your nostrils; Yet you have not returned to Me,” Says the Lord.“ I overthrew some of you, As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, And you were like a firebrand plucked from the burning; Yet you have not returned to Me,” Says the Lord.“ Therefore thus will I do to you, O Israel; Because I will do this to you, Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!”

A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken! Who can but prophesy?“ Proclaim in the palaces at Ashdod, And in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say:‘ Assemble on the mountains of Samaria; See great tumults in her midst, And the oppressed within her.For they do not know to do right,’ Says the Lord,‘ Who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.’”Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:“ An adversary shall be all around the land; He shall sap your strength from you, And your palaces shall be plundered.”Thus says the Lord:“ As a shepherd takes from the mouth of a lion Two legs or a piece of an ear, So shall the children of Israel be taken out Who dwell in Samaria— In the corner of a bed and on the edge of a couch!Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,” Says the Lord GOD, the God of hosts,“ That in the day I punish Israel for their transgressions, I will also visit destruction on the altars of Bethel; And the horns of the altar shall be cut off And fall to the ground.I will destroy the winter house along with the summer house; The houses of ivory shall perish, And the great houses shall have an end,” Says the Lord.

The voice said,“ Cry out!” And he said,“ What shall I cry?”“ All flesh is grass, And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass.The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”

For the people do not turn to Him who strikes them, Nor do they seek the Lord of hosts.

Why should a living man complain, A man for the punishment of his sins?Let us search out and examine our ways, And turn back to the Lord;Let us lift our hearts and hands To God in heaven.We have transgressed and rebelled; You have not pardoned.

The Lord is known by the judgment He executes; The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Meditation. Selah

And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said,“ Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes.And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water.But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.

The Lord gives voice before His army, For His camp is very great; For strong is the One who executes His word. For the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; Who can endure it?“ Now, therefore,” says the Lord,“ Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.Who knows if He will turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him— A grain offering and a drink offering For the Lord your God?Blow the trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly;Gather the people, Sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and nursing babes; Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, And the bride from her dressing room.Let the priests, who minister to the Lord, Weep between the porch and the altar; Let them say,“ Spare Your people, O Lord, And do not give Your heritage to reproach, That the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples,‘ Where is their God?’”Then the Lord will be zealous for His land, And pity His people.

Woe to you who are at ease in Zion, And trust in Mount Samaria, Notable persons in the chief nation, To whom the house of Israel comes!

I will say to God,‘ Do not condemn me; Show me why You contend with me.

For affliction does not come from the dust, Nor does trouble spring from the ground;Yet man is born to trouble, As the sparks fly upward.“ But as for me, I would seek God, And to God I would commit my cause—

then I will make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.”’”

Lord, when Your hand is lifted up, they will not see. But they will see and be ashamed For their envy of people; Yes, the fire of Your enemies shall devour them.

Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David inquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered,“ It is because of Saul and his bloodthirsty house, because he killed the Gibeonites.”

On the land of my people will come up thorns and briers, Yes, on all the happy homes in the joyous city;Because the palaces will be forsaken, The bustling city will be deserted. The forts and towers will become lairs forever, A joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks—

Whoever is wise will observe these things, And they will understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.

According to Your name, O God, So is Your praise to the ends of the earth; Your right hand is full of righteousness.

Yet the fortified city will be desolate, The habitation forsaken and left like a wilderness; There the calf will feed, and there it will lie down And consume its branches.

“ Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects; Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.

A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, But the simple pass on and are punished.

Samaria is held guilty, For she has rebelled against her God. They shall fall by the sword, Their infants shall be dashed in pieces, And their women with child ripped open.
