They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them. They defraud people of their homes, they rob them of their inheritance.

For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

“ Then I will come near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, those who oppress the wage earner in his wages or the widow or the orphan, and those who turn away the stranger from justice and do not fear Me,” says the Lord of armies.

‘ I have certainly seen yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons,’ declares the Lord,‘ and I will repay you on this property,’ declares the Lord. Now then, pick him up and throw him on the property, in accordance with the word of the Lord.”

“ You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male slave, or his female slave, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

And Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying,“ Give me your vineyard so that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is close beside my house, and I will give you a better vineyard in place of it; if you prefer, I will give you what it is worth in money.”But Naboth said to Ahab,“ The Lord forbid me that I would give you the inheritance of my fathers!”So Ahab entered his house sullen and furious because of the answer that Naboth the Jezreelite had given to him, since he said,“ I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed and turned his face away, and ate no food.But Jezebel his wife came to him and said to him,“ How is it that your spirit is so sullen that you are not eating food?”So he said to her,“ It is because I was speaking to Naboth the Jezreelite and saying to him,‘ Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it pleases you, I will give you a vineyard in place of it.’ But he said,‘ I will not give you my vineyard.’ ”Jezebel his wife said to him,“ Do you now reign over Israel? Arise, eat bread, and let your heart be joyful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters to the elders and to the nobles who were living with Naboth in his city.Now she had written in the letters, saying,“ Proclaim a fast and seat Naboth at the head of the people;and seat two worthless men opposite him, and have them testify against him, saying,‘ You cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”So the men of his city, the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did just as Jezebel had sent word to them, just as it was written in the letters which she had sent them.They proclaimed a fast, and seated Naboth at the head of the people.Then the two worthless men came in and sat opposite him; and the worthless men testified against him, against Naboth, before the people, saying,“ Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones.Then they sent word to Jezebel, saying,“ Naboth has been stoned and is dead.”And when Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab,“ Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth, the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.”When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab got up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,“ Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone down to take possession of it.And you shall speak to him, saying,‘ This is what the Lord says:“ Have you murdered and also taken possession?” ’ And you shall speak to him, saying,‘ The Lord says this:“ In the place where the dogs licked up the blood of Naboth, the dogs will lick up your blood, yours as well.” ’ ”

Here I am; testify against me before the Lord and His anointed. Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I exploited? Whom have I oppressed, or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to close my eyes with it? I will return it to you.”And they said,“ You have not exploited us or oppressed us, or taken anything from anyone’s hand.”

Furthermore, wine betrays an arrogant man, So that he does not achieve his objective. He enlarges his appetite like Sheol, And he is like death, never satisfied. He also gathers to himself all the nations And collects to himself all the peoples.“ Will all of these not take up a song of ridicule against him, Even a saying and insinuations against him And say,‘ Woe to him who increases what is not his— For how long— And makes himself rich with debts!’Will your creditors not rise up suddenly, And those who collect from you awaken? Indeed, you will become plunder for them.Since you have looted many nations, All the rest of the peoples will loot you— Because of human bloodshed and violence done to the land, To the town and all its inhabitants.“ Woe to him who makes evil profit for his household, To put his nest on high, To be saved from the hand of catastrophe!

Now there was a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brothers.For there were those who said,“ We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let’s get grain so that we may eat and live.”And there were others who said,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses so that we might get grain because of the famine.”There also were those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards.And now our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our children like their children. Yet behold, we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters are forced into bondage already, and we are helpless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”

oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not restore a pledge, but raises his eyes to the idols and commits abomination,

People remove landmarks; They seize and devour flocks.They drive away the donkeys of orphans; They seize the widow’s ox as a pledge.They push the needy aside from the road; The poor of the land have to hide themselves together.Behold, like wild donkeys in the wilderness They go out scavenging for food in their activity, As bread for their children in the desert.They harvest their feed in the field And glean the vineyard of the wicked.They spend the night naked, without clothing, And have no covering against the cold.They are wet from the mountain rains, And they hug the rock for lack of a shelter.Others snatch an orphan from the breast, And they seize it as a pledge against the poor.The poor move about naked without clothing, And they carry sheaves, while going hungry.Within the walls they produce oil; They tread wine presses but go thirsty.From the city people groan, And the souls of the wounded cry for help; Yet God does not pay attention to the offensiveness.

Now hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob And rulers of the house of Israel, Who despise justice And twist everything that is straight,

“ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut the kingdom of heaven in front of people; for you do not enter it yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

“ You shall not oppress a stranger nor torment him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.You shall not oppress any widow or orphan.If you oppress him at all, and if he does cry out to Me, I will assuredly hear his cry;and My anger will be kindled, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.
