And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread?And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee[ another] vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard.And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise,[ and] eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, and sealed[ them] with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that[ were] in his city, dwelling with Naboth.And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people:And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And[ then] carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.And the men of his city,[ even] the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them,[ and] as it[ was] written in the letters which she had sent unto them.They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people.And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him,[ even] against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead.And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead.And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, which[ is] in Samaria: behold,[ he is] in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to possess it.And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.

Behold, here I[ am]: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received[ any] bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s hand.

Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine,[ he is] a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and[ is] as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth[ that which is] not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and[ for] the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!

And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters,[ are] many: therefore we take up corn[ for them], that we may eat, and live.[ Some] also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute,[ and that upon] our lands and vineyards.Yet now our flesh[ is] as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and[ some] of our daughters are brought unto bondage[ already]: neither[ is it] in our power[ to redeem them]; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

[ Some] remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed[ thereof].They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.Behold,[ as] wild asses in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness[ yieldeth] food for them[ and] for[ their] children.They reap[ every one] his corn in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked.They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that[ they have] no covering in the cold.They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter.They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor.They cause[ him] to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf[ from] the hungry;[ Which] make oil within their walls,[ and] tread[ their] winepresses, and suffer thirst.Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly[ to them].

Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity.

But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in[ yourselves], neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry;And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
