After that He went out and looked at a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax office, and He said to him,“ Follow Me.”And he left everything behind, and got up and began following Him.And Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them.The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling to His disciples, saying,“ Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?”And Jesus answered and said to them,“ It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.”And they said to Him,“ The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink.”And Jesus said to them,“ You cannot make the attendants of the groom fast while the groom is with them, can you?But the days will come; and when the groom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.”And He was also telling them a parable:“ No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the patch from the new garment will not match the old.And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined.But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.

As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax office, and He* said to him,“ Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.And it* happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him.When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples,“ Why is He eating with tax collectors and sinners?”And hearing this, Jesus* said to them,“ It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they* came and* said to Him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”And Jesus said to them,“ While the groom is with them, the attendants of the groom cannot fast, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast.But the days will come when the groom is taken away from them, and then they will fast, on that day.“ No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results.And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”

And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich.Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and he was unable due to the crowd, because he was short in stature.So he ran on ahead and climbed up a sycamore tree in order to see Him, because He was about to pass through that way.And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him,“ Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”And he hurried and came down, and received Him joyfully.When the people saw this, they all began to complain, saying,“ He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner!”But Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord,“ Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I am giving to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I am giving back four times as much.”And Jesus said to him,“ Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham.For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.And He* said to them,“ Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of people.”Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and He called them.Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

When they had entered the city, they went up to the upstairs room where they were staying, that is, Peter, John, James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.

So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat while he was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah came over to him and threw his cloak on him.Then he left the oxen behind and ran after Elijah, and said,“ Please let me kiss my father and my mother, then I will follow you.” And he said to him,“ Go back, for what have I done to you?”So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them, and cooked their meat with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he got up and followed Elijah and served him.

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near Jesus to listen to Him.And both the Pharisees and the scribes began to complain, saying,“ This man receives sinners and eats with them.”

to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood,

Which of the two did the will of his father?” They* said,“ The first.” Jesus* said to them,“ Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you.For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even have second thoughts afterward so as to believe him.
