he said,“ Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him.

Paul went down, bent over him, and took him into his arms.“ Don’t worry,” he said,“ he’s alive!”

The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery.“ Look at you now!” they yelled at him.“ You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!”The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders also mocked Jesus.“ He saved others,” they scoffed,“ but he can’t save himself! So he is the King of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross right now, and we will believe in him!He trusted God, so let God rescue him now if he wants him! For he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”

The Lord, the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel, says to the one who is despised and rejected by the nations, to the one who is the servant of rulers:“ Kings will stand at attention when you pass by. Princes will also bow low because of the Lord, the faithful one, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

Then he said,“ Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”The disciples said,“ Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!”They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.

He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.

But I am a worm and not a man. I am scorned and despised by all!Everyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying,

But when Jesus heard about it he said,“ Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.”

Then she said to Elijah,“ O man of God, what have you done to me? Have you come here to point out my sins and kill my son?”But Elijah replied,“ Give me your son.” And he took the child’s body from her arms, carried him up the stairs to the room where he was staying, and laid the body on his bed.Then Elijah cried out to the Lord,“ O Lord my God, why have you brought tragedy to this widow who has opened her home to me, causing her son to die?”And he stretched himself out over the child three times and cried out to the Lord,“ O Lord my God, please let this child’s life return to him.”The Lord heard Elijah’s prayer, and the life of the child returned, and he revived!Then Elijah brought him down from the upper room and gave him to his mother.“ Look!” he said.“ Your son is alive!”Then the woman told Elijah,“ Now I know for sure that you are a man of God, and that the Lord truly speaks through you.”

But Peter asked them all to leave the room; then he knelt and prayed. Turning to the body he said,“ Get up, Tabitha.” And she opened her eyes! When she saw Peter, she sat up!
