When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,

Jeremiah also lamented for Josiah. And to this day all the singing men and the singing women speak of Josiah in their lamentations. They made it a custom in Israel; and indeed they are written in the Laments.

While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said,“ Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue,“ Do not be afraid; only believe.”And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly.When He came in, He said to them,“ Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.”And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying.

While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him,“ Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.”But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying,“ Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.”When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl.

While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying,“ My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.”So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples.

They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying:‘ We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not weep.’

and saying:‘ We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not lament.’

Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Consider and call for the mourning women, That they may come; And send for skillful wailing women, That they may come.Let them make haste And take up a wailing for us, That our eyes may run with tears, And our eyelids gush with water.For a voice of wailing is heard from Zion:‘ How we are plundered! We are greatly ashamed, Because we have forsaken the land, Because we have been cast out of our dwellings.’”Yet hear the word of the Lord, O women, And let your ear receive the word of His mouth; Teach your daughters wailing, And everyone her neighbor a lamentation.
