隨後，約翰的門徒們前來問耶穌：「為什麼我們和法利賽人經常禁食，而你的門徒們卻不禁食呢？」

約翰之門徒就耶穌曰、我與𠵽唎㘔人、往往禁食、惟爾門徒不禁食、何也、

時有如望之徒晉謁曰：『吾儕及法利塞人恆齋、爾徒獨不齋何也？』

Then John’s disciples came and asked him,“ How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day John’s disciples came. They said to Jesus,“ We and the Pharisees often go without eating. Why don’t your disciples go without eating?”

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

那時，約翰的門徒和法利賽人都禁食。他們來問耶穌說：「約翰的門徒和法利賽人的門徒禁食，你的門徒卻不禁食，這是為甚麼呢？」耶穌對他們說：「新郎和賓客在一起的時候，賓客怎麼能禁食呢？只要新郎和他們在一起，他們不能禁食。但日子將到，新郎要被帶走，那日他們就要禁食了。「沒有人把新布縫在舊衣服上，若是這樣，所補上的新布會撕破舊衣服，裂口就更大了。也沒有人把新酒裝在舊皮袋裏，若是這樣，酒會脹破皮袋，酒和皮袋都糟蹋了。相反地，新酒要裝在新皮袋裏。」

他們對耶穌說：「約翰的門徒常常禁食祈禱，法利賽人的門徒也是這樣，惟獨跟你在一起的又吃又喝。」耶穌對他們說：「新郎和賓客在一起的時候，你們怎麼能叫賓客禁食呢？但日子將到，新郎要被帶走，那些日子他們就要禁食了。」耶穌又講一個比喻，對他們說：「沒有人把新衣服撕下一塊來補在舊衣服上，若是這樣，會把新的撕裂了，並且所撕下來的那塊新的和舊的也不相稱。也沒有人把新酒裝在舊皮袋裏；若是這樣，新酒會脹破皮袋，酒就漏出來，皮袋也糟蹋了。相反地，新酒必須裝在新皮袋裏。沒有人喝了陳酒又想喝新的；他總說陳的好。」

「你們禁食的時候，不可像那假冒為善的人，臉上帶着愁容；因為他們蓬頭垢面，故意讓人看出他們在禁食。我實在告訴你們，他們已經得了他們的賞賜。

約翰來了，既不吃也不喝，人們就說他是被鬼附的；人子來了，也吃也喝，他們又說這人貪食好酒，是稅吏和罪人的朋友。而智慧是由它的果子來證實的。」

耶穌向那些自以為義而藐視別人的人講了這比喻：「有兩個人上聖殿去禱告，一個是法利賽人，一個是稅吏。法利賽人獨自站着，自言自語地禱告說：『上帝啊，我感謝你，我不像別人勒索、不義、姦淫，也不像這個稅吏。我每週禁食兩次，凡我所得的都獻上十分之一。』

約翰的門徒和一個猶太人辯論潔淨的禮儀，

很多人聲稱自己忠信，但誠信的人誰能遇着呢？

約翰在監獄裏聽見基督所做的事，就派他的門徒去，

耶穌知道法利賽人聽見他收門徒和施洗比約翰還多，（
