One day John’s disciples came. They said to Jesus,“ We and the Pharisees often go without eating. Why don’t your disciples go without eating?”

時、約翰之門徒至、曰、我與法利賽人數禁食、惟爾門徒不禁食、何也、

約翰之門徒就耶穌曰、我與𠵽唎㘔人、往往禁食、惟爾門徒不禁食、何也、

時有如望之徒晉謁曰：『吾儕及法利塞人恆齋、爾徒獨不齋何也？』

Then John’s disciples came and asked him,“ How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then come to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?

Then John’s disciples came to Him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?

Then John’s disciples came to Jesus and asked,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”

John’s disciples and the Pharisees were going without eating. Some people came to Jesus. They said to him,“ John’s disciples are fasting. The disciples of the Pharisees are also fasting. But your disciples are not. Why aren’t they?”Jesus answered,“ How can the guests of the groom go without eating while he is with them? They will not fast as long as he is with them.But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them. On that day they will go without eating.“ No one sews a patch of new cloth on old clothes. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old. That will make the tear worse.No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins. Then the wine and the wineskins will both be destroyed. No, people pour new wine into new wineskins.”

Some of the people who were there said to Jesus,“ John’s disciples often pray and go without eating. So do the disciples of the Pharisees. But yours go on eating and drinking.”Jesus answered,“ Can you make the friends of the groom fast while he is with them?But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them. In those days they will go without eating.”Then Jesus gave them an example. He said,“ No one tears a piece out of new clothes to patch old clothes. Otherwise, they will tear the new clothes. Also, the patch from the new clothes will not match the old clothes.No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins. The wine will run out, and the wineskins will be destroyed.No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.After drinking old wine, no one wants the new. They say,‘ The old wine is better.’ ”

“ When you go without eating, do not look gloomy like those who only pretend to be holy. They make their faces look very sad. They want to show people they are fasting. What I’m about to tell you is true. They have received their complete reward.

When John came, he didn’t eat or drink as you do. And people say,‘ He has a demon.’But when the Son of Man came, he ate and drank as you do. And people say,‘ This fellow is always eating and drinking far too much. He’s a friend of tax collectors and“ sinners.” ’ By wise actions wisdom is shown to be right.”

Jesus told a story to some people who were sure they were right with God. They looked down on everyone else.He said to them,“ Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee. The other was a tax collector.The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed.‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other people,’ he said.‘ I am not like robbers or those who do other evil things. I am not like those who commit adultery. I am not even like this tax collector.I fast twice a week. And I give a tenth of all I get.’

Some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew began to argue. They argued about special washings to make people“ clean.”

Many claim to have love that never fails. But who can find a faithful person?

John the Baptist was in prison. When he heard about the actions of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to him.

Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard about him. They had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John.
