Then John’s disciples came to Jesus and asked,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”

随后，约翰的门徒们前来问耶稣：“为什么我们和法利赛人经常禁食，而你的门徒们却不禁食呢？”

那時，約翰的門徒來見耶穌，說：「我們和法利賽人常常禁食，你的門徒倒不禁食，這是為甚麼呢？」

那時約翰的門徒上前來見耶穌說：『我們和法利賽人都禁食，你的門徒卻不禁食，為甚麼呢？』

隨後，約翰的門徒們前來問耶穌：「為什麼我們和法利賽人經常禁食，而你的門徒們卻不禁食呢？」

時、約翰之門徒至、曰、我與法利賽人數禁食、惟爾門徒不禁食、何也、

約翰之門徒就耶穌曰、我與𠵽唎㘔人、往往禁食、惟爾門徒不禁食、何也、

時約翰之門徒就耶穌曰、我儕與法利賽人、往往禁食、爾門徒不禁食、何也、

時有如望之徒晉謁曰：『吾儕及法利塞人恆齋、爾徒獨不齋何也？』

Then John’s disciples came and asked him,“ How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day John’s disciples came. They said to Jesus,“ We and the Pharisees often go without eating. Why don’t your disciples go without eating?”

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then come to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?

Then John’s disciples came to Him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. So they came to Jesus and said,“ Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?”Jesus said to them,“ The wedding guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they do not fast.But the days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and at that time they will fast.No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and the tear becomes worse.And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be destroyed. Instead new wine is poured into new wineskins.”

Then they said to him,“ John’s disciples frequently fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours continue to eat and drink.”So Jesus said to them,“ You cannot make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you?But those days are coming, and when the bridegroom is taken from them, at that time they will fast.”He also told them a parable:“ No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews it on an old garment. If he does, he will have torn the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old.And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.Instead new wine must be poured into new wineskins.No one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says,‘ The old is good enough.’”

“ When you fast, do not look sullen like the hypocrites, for they make their faces unattractive so that people will see them fasting. I tell you the truth, they have their reward.

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say,‘ He has a demon!’The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say,‘ Look at him, a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

Jesus also told this parable to some who were confident that they were righteous and looked down on everyone else.“ Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.The Pharisee stood and prayed about himself like this:‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other people: extortionists, unrighteous people, adulterers– or even like this tax collector.I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.’

Now a dispute came about between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew concerning ceremonial washing.

Many people profess their loyalty, but a faithful person– who can find?

Now when John heard in prison about the deeds Christ had done, he sent his disciples to ask a question:
