那時約翰的門徒上前來見耶穌說：『我們和法利賽人都禁食，你的門徒卻不禁食，為甚麼呢？』

時有如望之徒晉謁曰：『吾儕及法利塞人恆齋、爾徒獨不齋何也？』

Then John’s disciples came and asked him,“ How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day John’s disciples came. They said to Jesus,“ We and the Pharisees often go without eating. Why don’t your disciples go without eating?”

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then come to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?

Then John’s disciples came to Him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then John’s disciples came to Jesus and asked,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”

約翰的門徒和法利賽人正在禁食；有人來對耶穌說：『約翰的門徒和法利賽人的門徒都禁食，你的門徒不禁食，為甚麼呢？』耶穌對他們說：『新郎跟賀喜的朋友在一起的時候，賀喜的朋友哪能禁食呢？儘有新郎跟他們在一起的時候，他們總不能禁食的。但是日子必到，新郎要從他們中間被取去，那時、他們就要在那日子禁食了。沒有人把未漂過的補丁縫在舊衣裳上；如果那樣，所補上的會帶裂它，新的帶裂舊的，破裂就更壞了。也沒有人把新酒裝在舊皮袋裏；如果那樣，新酒便將皮袋漲破，酒和皮袋就都毁壞了。不，新酒總要裝在新皮袋裏。』

有人對耶穌說：『約翰的門徒常常禁食，作祈求上帝的事；法利賽人的門徒也是這樣；惟獨你的門徒也喫也喝！』耶穌對他們說：『新郎跟賀喜的朋友在一起的時候，你們哪能叫他們禁食呢？但是日子必到，新郎要從他們中間被取去，那時、他們就要在那些日子禁食了。』耶穌也對他們講一個比喻說：『沒有人從新衣上撕下一塊補丁來，去補在舊衣裳上；如果那樣，他不但把新的撕裂了，就是那從新的撕下來的補丁也跟舊的不相稱啊。也沒有人把新酒裝在舊皮袋裏；如果那樣，新酒便將皮袋漲破，酒會迸流出來，皮袋就毁壞了。不，新酒必須裝在新皮袋裏。沒有人喝了陳酒、還想要新的；他總說「陳的好。」』

你們禁食的時候、別像假冒為善的人帶着愁容了，因為他們把臉顯得難看，好對人顯出他們在禁食；我實在告訴你們，他們已經收到了他們的賞報了。

約翰來了，也不喫、也不喝，人就說：「他有鬼附着」。人子來了，也喫也喝，人就說：「看哪，一個貪喫的人和酒徒！收稅人和「罪人」的朋友！」但智慧總是從智慧的行為得證為對的。』

耶穌也對那些倚靠自己為義、而藐視其他的人的、講這一個比喻。『有兩個人上殿裏去禱告，一個是法利賽人，另一個是收稅人。那法利賽人站着，用以下這些話禱告說：「上帝啊，我感謝你，我不像其他的人、勒索、不義、姦淫，或者竟像這個收稅人。我每安息週禁食兩次；凡所賺得的，我納上十分之一。」

當下約翰門徒中的人同猶太人起了辯論關於潔淨的事。

人多宣稱自己的忠愛；但忠信人誰能遇得着呢？

約翰在監獄裏聽見基督的事工，就打發門徒，

那時法利賽人聽見耶穌收門徒並施洗禮比約翰還多；
