時有如望之徒晉謁曰：『吾儕及法利塞人恆齋、爾徒獨不齋何也？』

Then John’s disciples came and asked him,“ How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day John’s disciples came. They said to Jesus,“ We and the Pharisees often go without eating. Why don’t your disciples go without eating?”

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

約翰的門徒們和法利賽人正禁食的時候，有些人來問耶穌：「為什麼約翰的門徒們和法利賽人的門徒們都禁食，而你的門徒們卻不禁食呢？」耶穌對他們說：「新郎與賓客在一起的時候，難道賓客能禁食嗎？只要他們與新郎在一起，他們就不能禁食。可是日子將要來到：當新郎從他們中間被帶走的時候，他們那時——在那一天就要禁食了。沒有人把沒縮過水的布塊補在舊衣服上。否則所補上的新布會扯壞舊衣服，造成更大的裂口。同樣，也沒有人把新酒裝在舊皮袋裡，否則酒會脹破皮袋，酒和皮袋都糟蹋了。因此，新酒必須裝在新皮袋裡。」

他們對耶穌說：「約翰的門徒們經常禁食、祈禱，法利賽人的門徒們也是如此，而你的門徒們卻又吃又喝。」耶穌對他們說：「新郎與賓客在一起的時候，難道你們能叫賓客禁食嗎？可是日子將要來到：當新郎從他們中間被帶走的時候，他們那時——在那些日子裡就要禁食了。」耶穌又對他們講了一個比喻：「沒有人從新衣服上撕下一塊布來縫在舊衣服上，否則，他不但撕破了新衣服，而且來自新衣服的那塊布與舊衣服不相稱。也沒有人把新酒裝在舊皮袋裡，否則新酒會脹破舊皮袋，酒會流出來，皮袋也會糟蹋了。因此，新酒必須裝在新皮袋裡。沒有人喝了陳酒以後想喝新酒，因為他總說：『還是陳酒好。』」

「你們禁食的時候，不要像偽善的人那樣愁眉苦臉。他們裝出難看的樣子，好讓人看出他們在禁食。我確實地告訴你們：他們已經得到了他們的報償。

「因為約翰來了，不吃也不喝，他們就說：『他有鬼魔附身！』人子來了，也吃也喝，他們就說：『看，這個貪食好酒的人！稅吏和罪人的朋友！』然而，智慧是憑著智慧的行為被證明為義的。」

耶穌還對某些自以為義而藐視其他人的，講了這個比喻：「有兩個人上聖殿去禱告。一個是法利賽人，另一個是稅吏。那法利賽人站著，向自己禱告這些話：『神哪，我感謝你，因為我不像其他人那樣：勒索、不義、通姦，也不像這個稅吏。我一週禁食兩次，並奉獻我所有收入的十分之一。』

約翰的門徒們與一個猶太人，為了潔淨禮起了辯論。

許多人自稱是忠誠的，但真正忠實的人，誰能找到呢？

約翰在監獄裡聽說了基督所做的事，就派自己的幾個門徒去

耶穌知道，法利賽人聽說他收門徒和施洗比約翰更多。
