Jesus said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying,“ All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,“ Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.”He answered them,“ Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?For God commanded,‘ Honor your father and your mother,’ and,‘ He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’But you say,‘ Whoever may tell his father or his mother,“ Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,”he shall not honor his father or mother.’ You have made the commandment of God void because of your tradition.You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,‘ These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.And in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrine rules made by men.’”

I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you. I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him.It shall happen, that whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

But as for me, I am full of power by Yahweh’s Spirit, and of judgment, and of might, to declare to Jacob his disobedience, and to Israel his sin.

The Lord Yahweh has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with words him who is weary. He awakens morning by morning, he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said,“ By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?”Jesus answered them,“ I also will ask you one question, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things.The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from men?” They reasoned with themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask us,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’But if we say,‘ From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet.”They answered Jesus, and said,“ We don’t know.” He also said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to withstand or to contradict.

But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,

“ Beware of those scribes who like to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts;who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these will receive greater condemnation.”

saying,“ The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses’ seat.All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.But they do all their works to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad, enlarge the fringes of their garments,and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,

They weren’t able to withstand the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke.

The prophet who has a dream, let him tell a dream; and he who has my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the straw to the wheat?” says Yahweh.“ Isn’t my word like fire?” says Yahweh;“ and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

The Pharisees and the scribes asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?”He answered them,“ Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,‘ This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.But they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’“ For you set aside the commandment of God, and hold tightly to the tradition of men— the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things.”He said to them,“ Full well do you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.For Moses said,‘ Honor your father and your mother;’ and,‘ He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’But you say,‘ If a man tells his father or his mother,“ Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban,”’” that is to say, given to God,“ then you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother,making void the word of God by your tradition, which you have handed down. You do many things like this.”

For Moses indeed said to the fathers,‘ The Lord God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me. You shall listen to him in all things whatever he says to you.It will be that every soul that will not listen to that prophet will be utterly destroyed from among the people.’

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourselves.“ Woe to you, you blind guides, who say,‘ Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?‘ Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?’You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it.He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who has been living in it.He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!

but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery.

for the king’s word is supreme. Who can say to him,“ What are you doing?”
