That’s because he taught like one who had authority. He did not speak like their teachers of the law.

And Jesus said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying,“ All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,“ Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”He answered and said to them,“ Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?For God commanded, saying,‘ Honor your father and your mother’; and,‘ He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’But you say,‘ Whoever says to his father or mother,“ Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”—then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:‘ These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.

But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord, And of justice and might, To declare to Jacob his transgression And to Israel his sin.

“ The Lord GOD has given Me The tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak A word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear To hear as the learned.

Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said,“ By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?”But Jesus answered and said to them,“ I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things:The baptism of John— where was it from? From heaven or from men?” And they reasoned among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say to us,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’But if we say,‘ From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all count John as a prophet.”So they answered Jesus and said,“ We do not know.” And He said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

“ Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts,who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

saying:“ The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments.They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,

And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke.

“ The prophet who has a dream, let him tell a dream; And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat?” says the Lord.“ Is not My word like a fire?” says the Lord,“ And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him,“ Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”He answered and said to them,“ Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:‘ This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men— the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”He said to them,“ All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.For Moses said,‘ Honor your father and your mother’; and,‘ He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’But you say,‘ If a man says to his father or mother,“ Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’( that is, a gift to God),then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

For Moses truly said to the fathers,‘ The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you.And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.“ Woe to you, blind guides, who say,‘ Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.’Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?And,‘ Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it.’Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?Therefore he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it.He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it.And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.

Where the word of a king is, there is power; And who may say to him,“ What are you doing?”
