That’s because he taught like one who had authority. He did not speak like their teachers of the law.

And Jesus said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Then Jesus came near and said to them,“ All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Then Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked,“ Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat!”He answered them,“ And why do you break God’s commandment because of your tradition?For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, The one who speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.But you say,‘ Whoever tells his father or mother,“ Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple”—he does not have to honor his father.’ In this way, you have revoked God’s word because of your tradition.Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men.”

I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.I will hold accountable whoever does not listen to My words that he speaks in My name.

As for me, however, I am filled with power by the Spirit of the Lord, with justice and courage, to proclaim to Jacob his rebellion and to Israel his sin.

The Lord God has given Me the tongue of those who are instructed to know how to sustain the weary with a word. He awakens Me each morning; He awakens My ear to listen like those being instructed.

When He entered the temple complex, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to Him as He was teaching and said,“ By what authority are You doing these things? Who gave You this authority?”Jesus answered them,“ I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for Me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things.Where did John’s baptism come from? From heaven or from men?” They began to argue among themselves,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say to us,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’But if we say,‘ From men,’ we’re afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought John was a prophet.”So they answered Jesus,“ We don’t know.” And He said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

for I will give you such words and a wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

“ Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who love greetings in the marketplaces, the front seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.They devour widows’ houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive greater punishment.”

“ The scribes and the Pharisees are seated in the chair of Moses.Therefore do whatever they tell you, and observe it. But don’t do what they do, because they don’t practice what they teach.They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them.They do everything to be observed by others: They enlarge their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.They love the place of honor at banquets, the front seats in the synagogues,

But they were unable to stand up against his wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking.

The prophet who has only a dream should recount the dream, but the one who has My word should speak My word truthfully, for what is straw compared to grain?”— this is the Lord’s declaration.“ Is not My word like fire”— this is the Lord’s declaration—“ and like a hammer that pulverizes rock?

Then the Pharisees and the scribes asked Him,“ Why don’t Your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, instead of eating bread with ritually unclean hands?”He answered them,“ Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men.Disregarding the command of God, you keep the tradition of men.”He also said to them,“ You completely invalidate God’s command in order to maintain your tradition!For Moses said: Honor your father and your mother; and Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.But you say,‘ If a man tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is Corban’”( that is, a gift committed to the temple),“ you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.You revoke God’s word by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other similar things.”

Moses said: The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to Him in everything He will say to you.And everyone who will not listen to that Prophet will be completely cut off from the people.

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make one proselyte, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as fit for hell as you are!“ Woe to you, blind guides, who say,‘ Whoever takes an oath by the sanctuary, it means nothing. But whoever takes an oath by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by his oath.’Blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that sanctified the gold?Also,‘ Whoever takes an oath by the altar, it means nothing. But whoever takes an oath by the gift that is on it is bound by his oath.’Blind people! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?Therefore, the one who takes an oath by the altar takes an oath by it and by everything on it.The one who takes an oath by the sanctuary takes an oath by it and by Him who dwells in it.And the one who takes an oath by heaven takes an oath by God’s throne and by Him who sits on it.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law— justice, mercy, and faith. These things should have been done without neglecting the others.Blind guides! You strain out a gnat, yet gulp down a camel!

But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

For the king’s word is authoritative, and who can say to him,“ What are you doing?”
