For they loved human praise more than praise from God.

In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous,and you say,‘ If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we wouldn’t have taken part with them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’

Those who want to make a good impression in the flesh are the ones who would compel you to be circumcised— but only to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ.

so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.“ Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

So my people come to you in crowds, sit in front of you, and hear your words, but they don’t obey them. Their mouths go on passionately, but their hearts pursue dishonest profit.

And he told them,“ You are the ones who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly admired by people is revolting in God’s sight.

Then he gave them strict orders:“ Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

How can you believe, since you accept glory from one another but don’t seek the glory that comes from the only God?

“ Whenever you fast, don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they disfigure their faces so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Be sure to return it to him at sunset. Then he will sleep in it and bless you, and this will be counted as righteousness to you before the LORD your God.

As it is written: He distributed freely; he gave to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.Now the one who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will also provide and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in.

For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?

“ Ask all the people of the land and the priests: When you fasted and lamented in the fifth and in the seventh months for these seventy years, did you really fast for me?

Take care, then, that the light in you is not darkness.

For if I do this willingly, I have a reward, but if unwillingly, I am entrusted with a commission.What then is my reward? To preach the gospel and offer it free of charge and not make full use of my rights in the gospel.

For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will reward each according to what he has done.

For he considered reproach for the sake of Christ to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, since he was looking ahead to the reward.

Therefore, may my advice seem good to you my king. Separate yourself from your sins by doing what is right, and from your injustices by showing mercy to the needy. Perhaps there will be an extension of your prosperity.”

For this reason, we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.

On that day every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they will not put on a hairy cloak in order to deceive.
