“ You have heard that it was said to the people long ago,‘ You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’

“ You have heard what was said to people who lived long ago. They were told,‘ Do not commit murder.( Exodus 20:13) Anyone who murders will be judged for it.’

“ You have heard that it was said to those of old,‘ You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’

“ You have heard that our ancestors were told,‘ You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’

“ You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment.

“ You have heard that the ancients were told,‘ You shall not murder,’ and‘ Whoever commits murder shall be answerable to the court.’

“ You have heard that it was said to those of old,‘ You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’

“ Whoever strikes someone so that he dies must surely be put to death.But if he does not do it with premeditation, but it happens by accident, then I will appoint for you a place where he may flee.But if a man willfully attacks his neighbor to kill him cunningly, you will take him even from my altar that he may die.

“ You have heard that it was said,‘ Love your neighbor’ and‘ hate your enemy.’

For your lifeblood I will surely exact punishment, from every living creature I will exact punishment. From each person I will exact punishment for the life of the individual since the man was his relative.“ Whoever sheds human blood, by other humans must his blood be shed; for in God’s image God has made humankind.”

“ Again, you have heard that it was said to an older generation,‘ Do not break an oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.’

Then they must proclaim,“ Our hands have not spilled this blood, nor have we witnessed the crime.Do not blame your people Israel whom you redeemed, O LORD, and do not hold them accountable for the bloodshed of an innocent person.” Then atonement will be made for the bloodshed.In this manner you will purge out the guilt of innocent blood from among you, for you must do what is right before the LORD.

“ But if he hits someone with an iron tool so that he dies, he is a murderer. The murderer must surely be put to death.If he strikes him by throwing a stone large enough that he could die, and he dies, he is a murderer. The murderer must surely be put to death.Or if he strikes him with a wooden hand weapon so that he could die, and he dies, he is a murderer. The murderer must surely be put to death.The avenger of blood himself must kill the murderer; when he meets him, he must kill him.“ But if he strikes him out of hatred or throws something at him intentionally so that he dies,or with enmity he strikes him with his hand and he dies, the one who struck him must surely be put to death, for he is a murderer. The avenger of blood must kill the murderer when he meets him.

And they must stand as your towns of refuge from the avenger in order that the killer may not die until he has stood trial before the community.

“ You have heard that it was said,‘ An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’

“ You have heard that it was said,‘ Do not commit adultery.’

“ For inquire now of the former generation, and pay attention to the findings of their ancestors;For we were born yesterday and do not have knowledge, since our days on earth are but a shadow.Will they not instruct you and speak to you, and bring forth words from their understanding?

“ You know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me– how he murdered two commanders of the Israelite armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. During peacetime he struck them down like he would in battle; when he shed their blood as if in battle, he stained his own belt and the sandals on his feet.Do to him what you think is appropriate, but don’t let him live long and die a peaceful death.

She said,“ In the past they would always say,‘ Let them inquire in Abel,’ and that is how they settled things.

You must appoint judges and civil servants for each tribe in all your villages that the LORD your God is giving you, and they must judge the people fairly.

The king told him,“ Do as he said! Strike him down and bury him. Take away from me and from my father’s family the guilt of Joab’s murderous, bloody deeds.May the LORD punish him for the blood he shed; behind my father David’s back he struck down and murdered with the sword two men who were more innocent and morally upright than he– Abner son of Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army.
