“ You have heard that it was said to the people long ago,‘ You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’

“ You have heard what was said to people who lived long ago. They were told,‘ Do not commit murder.( Exodus 20:13) Anyone who murders will be judged for it.’

“ You have heard that it was said to those of old,‘ You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’

“ You have heard that our ancestors were told,‘ You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’

“ You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment.

“ He who strikes someone so that he dies shall certainly be put to death.Yet if he did not lie in wait for him, but God caused him to fall into his hand, then I will appoint you a place to which he may flee.If, however, someone is enraged against his neighbor, so as to kill him in a cunning way, you are to take him even from My altar, to be put to death.

“ You have heard that it was said,‘ You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

I certainly will require your lifeblood; from every animal I will require it. And from every person, from every man as his brother I will require the life of a person.Whoever sheds human blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made mankind.

“ Again, you have heard that the ancients were told,‘ You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.’

and they shall respond and say,‘ Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see who did.Forgive Your people Israel whom You have redeemed, Lord, and do not place the guilt for innocent blood in the midst of Your people Israel.’ And the guilt for bloodshed shall be forgiven them.So you shall remove the guilt for innocent blood from your midst, when you do what is right in the eyes of the Lord.

‘ But if he struck him with an iron object, so that he died, he is a murderer; the murderer must be put to death.And if he struck him with a stone in the hand, by which he would die, and as a result he did die, he is a murderer; the murderer must be put to death.Or if he struck him with a wooden object in the hand, by which he would die, and as a result he did die, he is a murderer; the murderer must be put to death.The blood avenger himself shall put the murderer to death; he himself shall put him to death when he meets him.Now if he pushed him in hatred, or he threw something at him with malicious intent, and as a result he died,or if he struck him with his hand with hostility, and as a result he died, the one who struck him must be put to death; he is a murderer. The blood avenger shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

The cities shall serve you as a refuge from the avenger, so that the one who commits manslaughter does not die until he stands before the congregation for trial.

“ You have heard that it was said,‘ Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’

“ Please inquire of past generations, And consider the things searched out by their fathers.For we are only of yesterday and know nothing, Because our days on earth are as a shadow.Will they not teach you and tell you, And bring forth words from their minds?

“ Now you yourself also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner and to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed; he also shed the blood of war in peace. And he put the blood of war on his belt that was on his waist, and on his sandals that were on his feet.So act as your wisdom dictates, and do not let his gray hair go down to Sheol in peace.

Then she spoke, saying,“ In the past they used to say,‘ They will undoubtedly ask advice at Abel,’ and that is how they ended a dispute.

“ You shall appoint for yourself judges and officers in all your towns which the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.

And the king said to him,“ Do just as he has spoken, and execute him and bury him, so that you may remove from me and from my father’s house the blood which Joab shed without justification.The Lord will return his blood on his own head, because he struck two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, while my father David did not know about it: Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah.
