耶穌在加利利湖邊行走，看見兄弟兩個人，就是那叫彼得的西門和他弟弟安得烈，正在湖裡撒網；他們本來是漁夫。耶穌就對他們說：「來跟從我！我將要使你們成為得人的漁夫。」他們立刻捨棄漁網，跟從了耶穌。耶穌從那裡往前走，看見另外兩個兄弟，就是西庇太的兒子雅各和他弟弟約翰，正在船上與他們的父親西庇太一起修補漁網。耶穌就召喚他們，他們立刻捨棄了船，告別他們的父親，跟從了耶穌。

一到天亮，他就招呼他的門徒，從他們中間揀選了十二個人，稱他們為使徒：西門——耶穌又稱他為彼得，他的弟弟安得烈，又有雅各、約翰、腓力、巴多羅邁、馬太、多馬，亞勒腓的兒子雅各，稱為激進派的西門，雅各的兒子猶大，還有那成為出賣者的加略人猶大。
