The tempter came to him and said,“ If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

During that time the devil came and said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”

And the tempter came and said to Him,“ If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Now when the tempter came to Him, he said,“ If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said,“ If only we had meat to eat!We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost— also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!” (niv)

For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain. (niv)

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman,“ Did God really say,‘ You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”The woman said to the serpent,“ We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,but God did say,‘ You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”“ You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.“ For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (niv)

“ Skin for skin!” Satan replied.“ A man will give all he has for his own life.But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.”The Lord said to Satan,“ Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.”So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. “ Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (niv)

Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown. (niv)

The great dragon was hurled down— that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:“ Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. (niv)

But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.They spoke against God; they said,“ Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?” (niv)

“ Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied.“ Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”The Lord said to Satan,“ Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. The Israelites said to them,“ If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” (niv)

Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished.He said to Jacob,“ Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!”( That is why he was also called Edom.)Jacob replied,“ First sell me your birthright.”“ Look, I am about to die,” Esau said.“ What good is the birthright to me?”But Jacob said,“ Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright. (niv)

Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying,“ Truly you are the Son of God.” (niv)

See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. (niv)

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.“ If you are the Son of God,” he said,“ throw yourself down from here. (niv)

At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. (niv)

And a voice from heaven said,“ This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (niv)

The devil said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” (niv)
