When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon- possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.

He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite— wiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations.

When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relationship to the Lord, she came to test Solomon with hard questions.

In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,“ Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God!”“ Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.“ Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.

He said,“ If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”

When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.He shouted at the top of his voice,“ What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”For Jesus had said to him,“ Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”Then Jesus asked him,“ What is your name?”“ My name is Legion,” he replied,“ for we are many.”And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.The demons begged Jesus,“ Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man— and told about the pigs as well.Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.

But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus.

He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man,“ Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves,“ This fellow is blaspheming!”Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said,“ Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?Which is easier: to say,‘ Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say,‘ Get up and walk’?But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man,“ Get up, take your mat and go home.”Then the man got up and went home.When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.

But others said,“ These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.

Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.

So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission.When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside,and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured.Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
