聽見了約翰的話而跟從耶穌的兩個人中，有一個是西門彼得的弟弟安得烈。安得烈先去找自己的哥哥西門，對他說：「我們找到了彌賽亞。」——「彌賽亞」翻譯出來就是「基督」。他就帶西門到耶穌那裡。耶穌注視著他，說：「你是約翰的兒子西門，你將被稱為磯法。」——「磯法」翻譯出來就是「彼得」。

以下是十二使徒的名字：首先是西門——也叫彼得，然後是他的弟弟安得烈，西庇太的兒子雅各，雅各的弟弟約翰，

西門——耶穌又稱他為彼得，他的弟弟安得烈，又有雅各、約翰、腓力、巴多羅邁、

耶穌從加利利湖邊經過，看見西門和他弟弟安得烈，正在湖裡撒網；他們本來是漁夫。耶穌就對他們說：「來跟從我！我將要使你們成為得人的漁夫。」他們立刻捨棄漁網，跟從了耶穌。稍往前走，耶穌看見西庇太的兒子雅各和他弟弟約翰。他們正在船上修補漁網。耶穌隨即召喚他們。他們就離開了在船上的父親西庇太和雇工們，並且跟著耶穌去了。

耶穌離開那地方，來到加利利湖邊，上了山坐在那裡。

有一次，當人群擁擠著耶穌，聽神的話語的時候，他正站在革尼撒勒湖邊。他看見湖邊停著兩條船，漁夫們下了船，正在洗網。有一條船是西門的，耶穌上去，請他把船划出去，稍微離岸。耶穌就坐下來，從船上教導眾人。講完了以後，他對西門說：「把船划到水深的地方，下網捕魚吧。」西門回答說：「老師，我們勞碌了一整夜，什麼也沒有捕到。不過按照你的話，我就下網吧。」他們這樣做了，網住了一大群魚，漁網幾乎要撐破。他們就招呼另一條船上的夥伴來幫忙；他們過來，裝滿了兩條船，甚至兩條船都幾乎要沉下去了。西門彼得看見，就俯伏在耶穌腳前，說：「主啊，離開我吧，因為我是個罪人！」那時，他和所有與他一起的人，都對這一網捕到的魚驚訝不已。西門的夥伴，就是西庇太的兒子雅各和約翰，也同樣驚訝。耶穌對西門說：「不要怕！從今以後，你將得人了。」他們把兩條船靠了岸，捨棄一切跟從了耶穌。

我還告訴你：你是彼得，我要在這磐石上建立我的教會，陰間的門不能勝過它。

這些事以後，耶穌渡過加利利湖，也就是太巴列湖，到對岸去。

雅各生約瑟，就是瑪麗亞的丈夫，那稱為基督的耶穌是由瑪麗亞所生的。這樣，從亞伯拉罕到大衛的各世代，一共有十四代；從大衛到被迫遷徙巴比倫的時候，也有十四代；從被迫遷徙巴比倫的時候到基督，又有十四代。耶穌基督的誕生是這樣的：耶穌的母親瑪麗亞已經許配給約瑟，在他們成婚以前，瑪麗亞就由聖靈懷了孕。

這些事以後，耶穌在太巴列湖邊又向門徒們顯明了自己。他是這樣顯明自己的：

他揀選了自己的僕人大衛，從羊圈中把他挑選出來，從所照顧的哺乳母羊當中把他帶出來，為要牧養自己的子民雅各，自己的繼業以色列。於是大衛就以純全的心牧養他們，以聰慧的手引導他們。

耶穌離開提爾地區，經過西頓，從德卡波利斯境內又來到加利利湖邊。

然而神卻揀選了世上愚拙的，為了使那些有智慧的羞愧；神又揀選了世上軟弱的，為了使那些強壯的羞愧；神也揀選了世上出身低微的、被人藐視的，就是那些不是什麼的，為了要廢除那些是個什麼的，好使所有的人在神面前都不能自誇，

他的一個門徒，就是西門彼得的弟弟安得烈，對耶穌說：
