And don’t presume to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.

勿自謂、我有亞伯拉罕為父也、我語汝、上帝能由此石興起亞伯拉罕之子孫焉、

勿自以為亞伯拉罕吾祖也、吾語爾、上帝能使此石為亞伯拉罕子孫焉、

毋心中自矜曰、亞伯拉罕吾祖也、吾語爾、天主能使此石為亞伯拉罕之子孫焉、

毋思吾輩有亞伯漢為我祖先；蓋吾語爾、天主全能、即欲化此頑石為亞伯漢之子孫、亦易如反掌耳。

And do not think you can say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

Don’t think you can say to yourselves,‘ Abraham is our father.’ I tell you, God can raise up children for Abraham even from these stones.

And do not presume to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

Don’t just say to each other,‘ We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.

and do not assume that you can say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you that God is able, from these stones, to raise up children for Abraham.

and do not think to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

And don’t presume to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones!

And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to[ our] father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

and don’t think you can say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones!

Don’t think to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t start saying to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.

For those of you who were baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ.There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus.And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.

Neither is it the case that all of Abraham’s children are his descendants. On the contrary, your offspring will be traced through Isaac.That is, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but the children of the promise are considered to be the offspring.

“ We are descendants of Abraham,” they answered him,“ and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say,‘ You will become free’?”

“ Brothers and sisters, children of Abraham’s race, and those among you who fear God, it is to us that the word of this salvation has been sent.

What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?

For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders,

‘ Father Abraham!’ he called out,‘ Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this flame!’

For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and the other by a free woman.But the one by the slave was born as a result of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born through promise.These things are being taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai and bears children into slavery— this is Hagar.Now Hagar represents Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.For it is written, Rejoice, childless woman, unable to give birth. Burst into song and shout, you who are not in labor, for the children of the desolate woman will be many, more numerous than those of the woman who has a husband.Now you too, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.But just as then the child born as a result of the flesh persecuted the one born as a result of the Spirit, so also now.But what does the Scripture say?“ Drive out the slave and her son, for the son of the slave will never be a coheir with the son of the free woman.”Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of a slave but of the free woman.

Are you greater than our father Abraham who died? And the prophets died. Who do you claim to be?”

“ Our father is Abraham,” they replied.“ If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus told them,“ you would do what Abraham did.But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.

“ Son of man, those who live in the ruins in the land of Israel are saying,‘ Abraham was only one person, yet he received possession of the land. But we are many; surely the land has been given to us as a possession.’

But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus replied to them,“ Why are you thinking this in your hearts?

He thought to himself,‘ What should I do, since I don’t have anywhere to store my crops?

Simeon has reported how God first intervened to take from the Gentiles a people for his name.

Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong.God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world— what is viewed as nothing— to bring to nothing what is viewed as something,

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself,“ This man, if he were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him— she’s a sinner!”

And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while still uncircumcised. This was to make him the father of all who believe but are not circumcised, so that righteousness may be credited to them also.And he became the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith our father Abraham had while he was still uncircumcised.For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.If those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made empty and the promise nullified,because the law produces wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression.This is why the promise is by faith, so that it may be according to grace, to guarantee it to all the descendants— not only to the one who is of the law but also to the one who is of Abraham’s faith. He is the father of us all.As it is written: I have made you the father of many nations— in the presence of the God in whom he believed, the one who gives life to the dead and calls things into existence that do not exist.

He answered,“ I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out.”

I tell you that many will come from east and west to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

At that time you were without Christ, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world.But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
