But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them:“ You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

John saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing. He said to them,“ You are like a nest of poisonous snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming of God’s anger?

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to watch him baptize, he denounced them.“ You brood of snakes!” he exclaimed.“ Who warned you to flee the coming wrath?

You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?

and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question,

“ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.

“ Flee from the midst of Babylon; let every one save his life! Be not cut off in her punishment, for this is the time of the Lord’s vengeance, the repayment he is rendering her.

How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, they cannot listen; behold, the word of the Lord is to them an object of scorn; they take no pleasure in it.

Jesus said to them,“ Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

If I say to the wicked,‘ You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, in order to save his life, that wicked person shall die for his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand.But if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, or from his wicked way, he shall die for his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.Again, if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits injustice, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die. Because you have not warned him, he shall die for his sin, and his righteous deeds that he has done shall not be remembered, but his blood I will require at your hand.But if you warn the righteous person not to sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live, because he took warning, and you will have delivered your soul.”

( For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders,and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.)And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him,“ Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?”

For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

And the Lord said to him,“ Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.“ But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words.

But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said,“ It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.”

Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish everyone with tears.

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him,“ Are we also blind?”

and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people,then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life.But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.“ So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.

The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them,“ Why did you not bring him?”The officers answered,“ No one ever spoke like this man!”The Pharisees answered them,“ Have you also been deceived?Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

( Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)

The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies.They have venom like the venom of a serpent, like the deaf adder that stops its ear,so that it does not hear the voice of charmers or of the cunning enchanter.O God, break the teeth in their mouths; tear out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!

But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him( that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy

And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying,

By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk.

but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

But you, draw near, sons of the sorceress, offspring of the adulterer and the loose woman.Whom are you mocking? Against whom do you open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue? Are you not children of transgression, the offspring of deceit,

They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.

They have known for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest party of our religion I have lived as a Pharisee.

The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus:‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

They hatch adders’ eggs; they weave the spider’s web; he who eats their eggs dies, and from one that is crushed a viper is hatched.

calling to the mountains and rocks,“ Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb,for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him.

And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world— he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying,“ Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him,“ You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council,“ Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.”And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.Then a great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party stood up and contended sharply,“ We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?”

And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

Then the disciples came and said to him,“ Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”

But when the Pharisees heard it, they said,“ It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.”

And he cautioned them, saying,“ Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.
