and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead— Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,

That same day some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came up to him and questioned him:

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in.

Leave Babylon; save your lives, each of you! Don’t perish because of her guilt. For this is the time of the LORD’s vengeance— he will pay her what she deserves.

Why is it you don’t understand that when I told you,‘ Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees,’ it wasn’t about bread?”Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the leaven in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

How much more then, since we have now been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from wrath.

Who can I speak to and give such a warning that they will listen? Look, their ear is uncircumcised, so they cannot pay attention. See, the word of the LORD has become contemptible to them— they find no pleasure in it.

Then Jesus told them,“ Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

If I say to the wicked person,‘ You will surely die,’ but you do not warn him— you don’t speak out to warn him about his wicked way in order to save his life— that wicked person will die for his iniquity. Yet I will hold you responsible for his blood.But if you warn a wicked person and he does not turn from his wickedness or his wicked way, he will die for his iniquity, but you will have rescued yourself.Now if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and acts unjustly, and I put a stumbling block in front of him, he will die. If you did not warn him, he will die because of his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. Yet I will hold you responsible for his blood.But if you warn the righteous person that he should not sin, and he does not sin, he will indeed live because he listened to your warning, and you will have rescued yourself.”

( For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, keeping the tradition of the elders.When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they have washed. And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and dining couches.)So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, instead of eating bread with ceremonially unclean hands?”

For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

But the Lord said to him,“ Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil.Fools! Didn’t he who made the outside make the inside too?But give from what is within to the poor, and then everything is clean for you.“ But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass justice and love for God. These things you should have done without neglecting the others.“ Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.“ Woe to you! You are like unmarked graves; the people who walk over them don’t know it.”

Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to trap him by what he said.

But some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said,“ It is necessary to circumcise them and to command them to keep the law of Moses.”

Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for three years I never stopped warning each one of you with tears.

You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

By faith Noah, after he was warned about what was not yet seen and motivated by godly fear, built an ark to deliver his family. By faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him,“ We aren’t blind too, are we?”

And suppose he sees the sword coming against the land and blows his ram’s horn to warn the people.Then, if anyone hears the sound of the ram’s horn but ignores the warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his death will be his own fault.Since he heard the sound of the ram’s horn but ignored the warning, his death is his own fault. If he had taken warning, he would have saved his life.However, suppose the watchman sees the sword coming but doesn’t blow the ram’s horn, so that the people aren’t warned, and the sword comes and takes away their lives. Then they have been taken away because of their iniquity, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’“ As for you, son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. When you hear a word from my mouth, give them a warning from me.

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they came together.

Then the servants came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them,“ Why didn’t you bring him?”The servants answered,“ No man ever spoke like this!”Then the Pharisees responded to them,“ Are you fooled too?Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in him?But this crowd, which doesn’t know the law, is accursed.”

Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

The wicked go astray from the womb; liars wander about from birth.They have venom like the venom of a snake, like the deaf cobra that stops up its ears,that does not listen to the sound of the charmers who skillfully weave spells.God, knock the teeth out of their mouths; LORD, tear out the young lions’ fangs.

Then the high priest rose up. He and all who were with him, who belonged to the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.

Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and questioned him:

This is how God’s children and the devil’s children become obvious. Whoever does not do what is right is not of God, especially the one who does not love his brother or sister.

Then they sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to Jesus to trap him in his words.

But since the Pharisees and experts in the law had not been baptized by him, they rejected the plan of God for themselves.)

But come here, you witch’s sons, offspring of an adulterer and a prostitute!Who are you mocking? Who are you opening your mouth and sticking out your tongue at? Isn’t it you, you rebellious children, you offspring of liars,

They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction from the Lord’s presence and from his glorious strengthon that day when he comes to be glorified by his saints and to be marveled at by all those who have believed, because our testimony among you was believed.

They have known me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived as a Pharisee.

The Pharisee was standing and praying like this about himself:‘ God, I thank you that I’m not like other people— greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.

They hatch viper’s eggs and weave spider’s webs. Whoever eats their eggs will die; crack one open, and a viper is hatched.

And they said to the mountains and to the rocks,“ Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb,because the great day of their wrath has come! And who is able to stand?”

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and scoffing at him.

So the great dragon was thrown out— the ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the one who deceives the whole world. He was thrown to earth, and his angels with him.Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say, The salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have now come, because the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been thrown down.

He then said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him,“ Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t start saying to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

When Paul realized that one part of them were Sadducees and the other part were Pharisees, he cried out in the Sanhedrin,“ Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. I am being judged because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead!”When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, and neither angel nor spirit, but the Pharisees affirm them all.The shouting grew loud, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party got up and argued vehemently,“ We find nothing evil in this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”

While they were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple police, and the Sadducees confronted them,because they were annoyed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.

Then the disciples came up and told him,“ Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?”

When the Pharisees heard this, they said,“ This man drives out demons only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.”

Then he gave them strict orders:“ Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.
