The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said,“ This man truly was the Son of God!”

When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed,“ This man truly was the Son of God!”

He trusted God, so let God rescue him now if he wants him! For he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”

When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said,“ Surely this man was innocent.”And when all the crowd that came to see the crucifixion saw what had happened, they went home in deep sorrow.But Jesus’ friends, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching.

He immediately called out his soldiers and officers and ran down among the crowd. When the mob saw the commander and the troops coming, they stopped beating Paul.

But the commanding officer wanted to spare Paul, so he didn’t let them carry out their plan. Then he ordered all who could swim to jump overboard first and make for land.

When Jesus returned to Capernaum, a Roman officer came and pleaded with him,

Then the commander called two of his officers and ordered,“ Get 200 soldiers ready to leave for Caesarea at nine o’clock tonight. Also take 200 spearmen and 70 mounted troops.

When the time came, we set sail for Italy. Paul and several other prisoners were placed in the custody of a Roman officer named Julius, a captain of the Imperial Regiment.

During that time the devil came and said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”

Paul called for one of the Roman officers and said,“ Take this young man to the commander. He has something important to tell him.”

“ Look at you now!” they yelled at him.“ You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!”

But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him,“ I demand in the name of the living God— tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

Once more the king sent a third captain with fifty men. But this time the captain went up the hill and fell to his knees before Elijah. He pleaded with him,“ O man of God, please spare my life and the lives of these, your fifty servants.See how the fire from heaven came down and destroyed the first two groups. But now please spare my life!”

In Caesarea there lived a Roman army officer named Cornelius, who was a captain of the Italian Regiment.

They all shouted,“ So, are you claiming to be the Son of God?” And he replied,“ You say that I am.”

Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles,“ Brothers, what should we do?”

At the same time there was a terrible earthquake that destroyed a tenth of the city. Seven thousand people died in that earthquake, and everyone else was terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.Then he brought them out and asked,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

The Jewish leaders replied,“ By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.”

and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord.
