Then he began to curse and swear,“ I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed.

Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them,“ I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed.

Then Peter began to curse and said to them,“ I don’t know the man!” Right away a rooster crowed.

Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear,“ I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed.

Peter swore,“ A curse on me if I’m lying— I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.

Now when they had finished breakfast, Jesus* said to Simon Peter,“ Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He* said to Him,“ Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He* said to him,“ Tend My lambs.”He* said to him again, a second time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He* said to Him,“ Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He* said to him,“ Shepherd My sheep.”He* said to him the third time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was hurt because He said to him the third time,“ Do you love Me?” And he said to Him,“ Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus* said to him,“ Tend My sheep.

Now the men of Israel were hard pressed on that day, for Saul had put the people under oath, saying,“ Cursed be the man who eats food before evening, and before I have avenged myself on my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.All the people of the land entered the forest, and there was honey on the ground.When the people entered the forest, behold, there was honey dripping; but no man put his hand to his mouth, because the people feared the oath.However, Jonathan had not heard it when his father put the people under oath; so he put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.Then one of the people responded and said,“ Your father strictly put the people under oath, saying,‘ Cursed be the man who eats food today.’ ” And the people were weary.

And Jesus* said to him,“ Truly I say to you, that this very night, before a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times.”

And all the people replied,“ His blood shall be on us and on our children!”

But Peter said,“ Man, I do not know what you are talking about!” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

And he said to his mother,“ The 1,100 pieces of silver that were taken from you, about which you uttered a curse and also spoke it in my hearing, behold, the silver is with me; I took it.” And his mother said,“ Blessed be my son by the Lord.”

But he began to curse himself and to swear,“ I do not know this man of whom you speak!”And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him,“ Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he hurried on and began to weep.

But he denied it, saying,“ I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he went out onto the porch.
