Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around,“ This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

Meanwhile, Peter was in the courtyard below. One of the servant girls who worked for the high priest came byand noticed Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked at him closely and said,“ You were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth.”But Peter denied it.“ I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, and he went out into the entryway. Just then, a rooster crowed.When the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others,“ This man is definitely one of them!”But Peter denied it again. A little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said,“ You must be one of them, because you are a Galilean.”Peter swore,“ A curse on me if I’m lying— I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind:“ Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he broke down and wept.

There he came to a cave, where he spent the night. But the Lord said to him,“ What are you doing here, Elijah?”

At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest,

Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and came to the high priest’s courtyard. He went in and sat with the guards and waited to see how it would all end.

“ Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael.“ Can anything good come from Nazareth?”“ Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.

They replied,“ Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for yourself— no prophet ever comes from Galilee!”[ The most ancient Greek manuscripts do not include John 7:53–8:11.]

After him, at the time of the census, there was Judas of Galilee. He got people to follow him, but he was killed, too, and all his followers were scattered.

Others said,“ He is the Messiah.” Still others said,“ But he can’t be! Will the Messiah come from Galilee?

Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in.The woman asked Peter,“ You’re not one of that man’s disciples, are you?”“ No,” he said,“ I am not.”Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.

The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there.A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said,“ This man was one of Jesus’ followers!”But Peter denied it.“ Woman,” he said,“ I don’t even know him!”After a while someone else looked at him and said,“ You must be one of them!”“ No, man, I’m not!” Peter retorted.About an hour later someone else insisted,“ This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too.”But Peter said,“ Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind:“ Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.

But God also rescued Lot out of Sodom because he was a righteous man who was sick of the shameful immorality of the wicked people around him.Yes, Lot was a righteous man who was tormented in his soul by the wickedness he saw and heard day after day.So you see, the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials, even while keeping the wicked under punishment until the day of final judgment.

But when he learned that the new ruler of Judea was Herod’s son Archelaus, he was afraid to go there. Then, after being warned in a dream, he left for the region of Galilee.So the family went and lived in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled what the prophets had said:“ He will be called a Nazarene.”

Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again,“ You’re not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, saying,“ No, I am not.”But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked,“ Didn’t I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?”Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.

And the crowds replied,“ It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
