But Jesus kept silent. The high priest said to him,“ I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou art the Christ, the Son of God.

Simon Peter answered,“ You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

“ If you are called to testify about something you have seen or that you know about, it is sinful to refuse to testify, and you will be punished for your sin.

But when the leading priests and the elders made their accusations against him, Jesus remained silent.

He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.

The people surrounded him and asked,“ How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”

They didn’t dare touch the honey because they all feared the oath they had taken.

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!

So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.So Jesus explained,“ I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished.For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants.In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge,so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.“ I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.“ And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice— the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.

He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him,“ Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer.

But Jesus made no response to any of the charges, much to the governor’s surprise.

“ Look at you now!” they yelled at him.“ You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!”

We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.”

Then Nathanael exclaimed,“ Rabbi, you are the Son of God— the King of Israel!”

I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.”

But the king replied sharply,“ How many times must I demand that you speak only the truth to me when you speak for the Lord?”

“ For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.“ There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.

But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him,“ Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied,“ O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you.

Pilate said,“ So you are a king?” Jesus responded,“ You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”

The Father and I are one.”

“ Who are you?” they demanded. Jesus replied,“ The one I have always claimed to be.

But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him,“ I demand in the name of the living God— tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”Jesus replied,“ You have said it. And in the future you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said,“ Blasphemy! Why do we need other witnesses? You have all heard his blasphemy.What is your verdict?”“ Guilty!” they shouted.“ He deserves to die!”

If you assist a thief, you only hurt yourself. You are sworn to tell the truth, but you dare not testify.

He trusted God, so let God rescue him now if he wants him! For he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”

At daybreak all the elders of the people assembled, including the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. Jesus was led before this high council,and they said,“ Tell us, are you the Messiah?” But he replied,“ If I tell you, you won’t believe me.And if I ask you a question, you won’t answer.But from now on the Son of Man will be seated in the place of power at God’s right hand.”They all shouted,“ So, are you claiming to be the Son of God?” And he replied,“ You say that I am.”“ Why do we need other witnesses?” they said.“ We ourselves heard him say it.”

He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.

The passage of Scripture he had been reading was this:“ He was led like a sheep to the slaughter. And as a lamb is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.He was humiliated and received no justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.”The eunuch asked Philip,“ Tell me, was the prophet talking about himself or someone else?”So beginning with this same Scripture, Philip told him the Good News about Jesus.

But one of the men saw him and said,“ Your father made the army take a strict oath that anyone who eats food today will be cursed. That is why everyone is weary and faint.”

But the king replied sharply,“ How many times must I demand that you speak only the truth to me when you speak for the Lord?”

why do you call it blasphemy when I say,‘ I am the Son of God’? After all, the Father set me apart and sent me into the world.

The Jewish leaders replied,“ By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.”

But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

For the Lord declares,“ I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.”The king proclaims the Lord’s decree:“ The Lord said to me,‘ You are my son. Today I have become your Father.

Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery.But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak.I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply.

The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said,“ This man truly was the Son of God!”

The priest will then put the woman under oath and say to her,‘ If no other man has had sex with you, and you have not gone astray and defiled yourself while under your husband’s authority, may you be immune from the effects of this bitter water that brings on the curse.But if you have gone astray by being unfaithful to your husband, and have defiled yourself by having sex with another man—’“ At this point the priest must put the woman under oath by saying,‘ May the people know that the Lord’s curse is upon you when he makes you infertile, causing your womb to shrivel and your abdomen to swell.

Now the men of Israel were pressed to exhaustion that day, because Saul had placed them under an oath, saying,“ Let a curse fall on anyone who eats before evening— before I have full revenge on my enemies.” So no one ate anything all day,
