耶稣还在说话的时候，忽然十二使徒之一的犹大来了。有一群人拿着刀剑和棍棒与他一起来，他们是祭司长们、经文士们和长老们所派来的。那出卖耶稣的人已经和他们定了一个暗号，说：“我如果亲吻谁，谁就是那个人。你们把他抓住，小心地带走。”犹大一到，就上前对耶稣说：“拉比！”然后亲吻了他。他们就下手拘捕了耶稣。站在旁边的一个门徒拔出刀来，向大祭司的奴仆砍去，削掉了他的一个耳朵。耶稣对他们说：“你们带着刀剑和棍棒出来抓我，就像对付强盗那样吗？我天天在圣殿里教导人，和你们在一起，而你们不抓我。不过这是为要应验那些经文。”这时候，所有的门徒都离开他逃跑了。

耶稣说了这些话，就与他的门徒们一起出去，过了汲沦溪谷。在那里有一个园子，耶稣和他的门徒们进去了。出卖耶稣的犹大也知道那地方，因为耶稣经常在那里与他的门徒们一同聚集。于是犹大领着一队士兵，还有祭司长们和法利赛人的差役们，带着灯笼、火把、兵器来到那里。耶稣知道就要临到自己的一切，于是上前对他们说：“你们找谁？”他们回答：“拿撒勒人耶稣。”耶稣说：“我就是。”出卖他的犹大也与他们站在一起。耶稣一说“我就是”，他们就往后退，倒在地上。于是耶稣又问：“你们找谁？”他们说：“拿撒勒人耶稣。”耶稣回答：“我已经告诉你们‘我就是’。因此，你们如果找我，就让这些人走吧！”这是为要应验耶稣说过的话：“你所赐给我的人，我一个也没有丢失。”西门彼得带着一把刀。他拔出刀来，向大祭司的奴仆砍去，削掉了他的右耳。那奴仆的名字是马勒古。耶稣就对彼得说：“把刀收回鞘里！父所赐给我的杯，我难道能不喝吗？”
