耶穌還在說話的時候，來了一群人，十二門徒中的猶大走在前頭，到了耶穌跟前要用嘴親他。耶穌對他說：“猶大，你用親吻作暗號出賣人子嗎？”左右的人見了，就說：“主啊，我們用刀砍好嗎？”他們中間有一個人砍了大祭司的僕人一刀，削掉他的右耳。耶穌說：“由他們吧！”就摸那人的耳朵，醫好了他。耶穌對那些前來捉拿他的祭司長、守殿官和長老說：“你們帶著刀棒出來，把我當作強盜捉拿嗎？我天天跟你們在殿裡，你們不向我下手；但現在是你們的時候了，也是黑暗掌權的時候了。”

耶穌說完了這些話，就和門徒出去，過了汲淪溪。在那裡有一個園子，耶穌和門徒進去了。出賣耶穌的猶大也知道那地方，因為耶穌和門徒常常在那裡聚集。那時，猶大帶著一隊兵，還有祭司長和法利賽人的差役，拿著燈籠、火把、武器，來到園子裡。耶穌知道快要臨到他身上的一切事，就出來對他們說：“你們找誰？”他們回答：“拿撒勒人耶穌！”耶穌說：“我就是。”出賣耶穌的猶大和他們站在那裡。耶穌一說“我就是”，他們就往後退，倒在地上。他再問他們：“你們找誰？”他們說：“拿撒勒人耶穌！”耶穌回答：“我已經告訴你們，我就是了。如果你們來找我，就讓這些人走吧。”這應驗了耶穌說過的話：“你賜給我的人，我一個也沒有失落。”西門．彼得帶著一把刀，就拔出來，向大祭司的僕人馬勒古砍去，削掉他的右耳。耶穌對彼得說：“把刀收入鞘裡去！父給我的杯，我怎能不喝呢？”
