Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. He said to them,“ Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

But I pray to you, Lord, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation.Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me.

Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.On reaching the place, he said to them,“ Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,“ Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.“ Why are you sleeping?” he asked them.“ Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.

Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.

They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples,“ Sit here while I pray.”He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.“ My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them.“ Stay here and keep watch.”Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.“ Abba, Father,” he said,“ everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping.“ Simon,” he said to Peter,“ are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.Returning the third time, he said to them,“ Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them,“ Who is it you want?”“ Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.“ I am he,” Jesus said.( And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)When Jesus said,“ I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.Again he asked them,“ Who is it you want?”“ Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.Jesus answered,“ I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled:“ I have not lost one of those you gave me.”Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear.( The servant’s name was Malchus.)Jesus commanded Peter,“ Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
