Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to the disciples,“ Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them,“ Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

He went away a second time and prayed,“ My Father, if this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will must be done.”

During his earthly life Christ offered both requests and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his devotion.

O LORD, may you hear my prayer and be favorably disposed to me! O God, because of your great loyal love, answer me with your faithful deliverance!Rescue me from the mud! Don’t let me sink! Deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep water!Don’t let the current overpower me! Don’t let the deep swallow me up! Don’t let the pit devour me!

Then Jesus went out and made his way, as he customarily did, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.When he came to the place, he said to them,“ Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”He went away from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed,“ Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done.”[Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.And in his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.]When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, exhausted from grief.So he said to them,“ Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you will not fall into temptation!”

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I groan in prayer, but help seems far away.My God, I cry out during the day, but you do not answer, and during the night my prayers do not let up.

Deliver me, O God, for the water has reached my neck.I sink into the deep mire where there is no solid ground; I am in deep water, and the current overpowers me.I am exhausted from shouting for help; my throat is sore; my eyes grow tired of looking for my God.

Then they went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples,“ Sit here while I pray.”He took Peter, James, and John with him, and became very troubled and distressed.He said to them,“ My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay alert.”Going a little farther, he threw himself to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour would pass from him.He said,“ Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”Then he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter,“ Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake for one hour?Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”He went away again and prayed the same thing.When he came again he found them sleeping; they could not keep their eyes open. And they did not know what to tell him.He came a third time and said to them,“ Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough of that! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.Get up, let us go. Look! My betrayer is approaching!”

When he had said these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley. There was an orchard there, and he and his disciples went into it.( Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, knew the place too, because Jesus had met there many times with his disciples.)So Judas obtained a squad of soldiers and some officers of the chief priests and Pharisees. They came to the orchard with lanterns and torches and weapons.Then Jesus, because he knew everything that was going to happen to him, came and asked them,“ Who are you looking for?”They replied,“ Jesus the Nazarene.” He told them,“ I am he.”( Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was standing there with them.)So when Jesus said to them,“ I am he,” they retreated and fell to the ground.Then Jesus asked them again,“ Who are you looking for?” And they said,“ Jesus the Nazarene.”Jesus replied,“ I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, let these men go.”He said this to fulfill the word he had spoken,“ I have not lost a single one of those whom you gave me.”Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest’s slave, cutting off his right ear.( Now the slave’s name was Malchus.)But Jesus said to Peter,“ Put your sword back into its sheath! Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?”
