In the days of His humanity, He offered up both prayers and pleas with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His devout behavior.

But as for me, my prayer is to You, Lord, at an acceptable time; God, in the greatness of Your mercy, Answer me with Your saving truth.Rescue me from the mud and do not let me sink; May I be rescued from those who hate me, and from the depths of water.May the flood of water not overflow me Nor the deep swallow me up, Nor the pit close its mouth on me.

And He came out and went, as was His habit, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him.Now when He arrived at the place, He said to them,“ Pray that you do not come into temptation.”And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray,saying,“ Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”[ Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.And being in agony, He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground].When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow,and He said to them,“ Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you do not come into temptation.”

My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my help are the words of my groaning.My God, I cry out by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest.

Save me, God, For the waters have threatened my life.I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood overflows me.I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; My eyes fail while I wait for my God.

They* came to a place named Gethsemane; and He* said to His disciples,“ Sit here until I have prayed.”And He* took with Him Peter, James, and John, and began to be very distressed and troubled.And He* said to them,“ My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.”And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began praying that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by.And He was saying,“ Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.”And He* came and* found them sleeping, and* said to Peter,“ Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour?Keep watching and praying, so that you will not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”And again He went away and prayed, saying the same words.And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to say in reply to Him.And He* came the third time, and* said to them,“ Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough. The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went away with His disciples across the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden which He entered with His disciples.Now Judas, who was betraying Him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples.So Judas, having obtained the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees,* came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, came out into the open and* said to them,“ Whom are you seeking?”They answered Him,“ Jesus the Nazarene.” He* said to them,“ I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.Now then, when He said to them,“ I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.He then asked them again,“ Whom are you seeking?” And they said,“ Jesus the Nazarene.”Jesus answered,“ I told you that I am He; so if you are seeking Me, let these men go on their way.”This took place so that the word which He spoke would be fulfilled:“ Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.”Then Simon Peter, since he had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus.So Jesus said to Peter,“ Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, am I not to drink it?”
