He also said to them,“ This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,

To this very day, I have obtained help that comes from God, and I stand and testify to both small and great, saying nothing else than what the prophets and Moses said would take place—that the Messiah must suffer, and that as the first to rise from the dead, He would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”

Woe to the world because of offenses. For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes.

For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way?”

Who has believed what we have heard? And who has the arm of the Lord been revealed to?He grew up before Him like a young plant and like a root out of dry ground. He didn’t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at Him, no appearance that we should desire Him.He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; He was despised, and we didn’t value Him.Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds.We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished Him for the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, He did not open His mouth.He was taken away because of oppression and judgment; and who considered His fate? For He was cut off from the land of the living; He was struck because of my people’s rebellion.They made His grave with the wicked and with a rich man at His death, although He had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully.Yet the Lord was pleased to crush Him severely. When You make Him a restitution offering, He will see His seed, He will prolong His days, and by His hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished.He will see it out of His anguish, and He will be satisfied with His knowledge. My righteous Servant will justify many, and He will carry their iniquities.Therefore I will give Him the many as a portion, and He will receive the mighty as spoil, because He submitted Himself to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet He bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.

After those 62 weeks the Messiah will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the coming prince will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come with a flood, and until the end there will be war; desolations are decreed.

While I was with them, I was protecting them by Your name that You have given Me. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture may be fulfilled.

“ Elijah does come first and restores everything,” He replied.“ How then is it written about the Son of Man that He must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

But all this has happened so that the prophetic Scriptures would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted Him and ran away.

As usual, Paul went to the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,explaining and showing that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead:“ This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah.”

He said to them,“ How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken!Didn’t the Messiah have to suffer these things and enter into His glory?”Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said,“ I’m thirsty!”

Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck.I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep waters, and a flood sweeps over me.I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. Though I did not steal, I must repay.God, You know my foolishness, and my guilty acts are not hidden from You.Do not let those who put their hope in You be disgraced because of me, Lord God of Hosts; do not let those who seek You be humiliated because of me, God of Israel.For I have endured insults because of You, and shame has covered my face.I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sonsbecause zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me.I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults.I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I was a joke to them.Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me.But as for me, Lord, my prayer to You is for a time of favor. In Your abundant, faithful love, God, answer me with Your sure salvation.Rescue me from the miry mud; don’t let me sink. Let me be rescued from those who hate me and from the deep waters.Don’t let the floodwaters sweep over me or the deep swallow me up; don’t let the Pit close its mouth over me.Answer me, Lord, for Your faithful love is good; in keeping with Your great compassion, turn to me.Don’t hide Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly!Draw near to me and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies.You know the insults I endure— my shame and disgrace. You are aware of all my adversaries.Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I waited for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but found no one.Instead, they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that would come to you searched and carefully investigated.They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when He testified in advance to the messianic sufferings and the glories that would follow.

My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from my deliverance and from my words of groaning?My God, I cry by day, but You do not answer, by night, yet I have no rest.But You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.Our fathers trusted in You; they trusted, and You rescued them.They cried to You and were set free; they trusted in You and were not disgraced.But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by people.Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads:“ He relies on the Lord; let Him rescue him; let the Lord deliver him, since He takes pleasure in him.”You took me from the womb, making me secure while at my mother’s breast.I was given over to You at birth; You have been my God from my mother’s womb.Do not be far from me, because distress is near and there is no one to help.Many bulls surround me; strong ones of Bashan encircle me.They open their mouths against me— lions, mauling and roaring.I am poured out like water, and all my bones are disjointed; my heart is like wax, melting within me.My strength is dried up like baked clay; my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You put me into the dust of death.For dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has closed in on me; they pierced my hands and my feet.I can count all my bones; people look and stare at me.They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing.But You, Lord, don’t be far away. My strength, come quickly to help me.Deliver my life from the sword, my only life from the power of these dogs.Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen.I will proclaim Your name to my brothers; I will praise You in the congregation.You who fear Yahweh, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor Him! All you descendants of Israel, revere Him!For He has not despised or detested the torment of the afflicted. He did not hide His face from him but listened when he cried to Him for help.I will give praise in the great congregation because of You; I will fulfill my vows before those who fear You.The humble will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will praise Him. May your hearts live forever!All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord. All the families of the nations will bow down before You,for kingship belongs to the Lord; He rules over the nations.All who prosper on earth will eat and bow down; all those who go down to the dust will kneel before Him— even the one who cannot preserve his life.Their descendants will serve Him; the next generation will be told about the Lord.They will come and tell a people yet to be born about His righteousness— what He has done.

God, You will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and treachery will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You.

“ Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David spoke in advance about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.For he was one of our number and was allotted a share in this ministry.”Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages. He fell headfirst and burst open in the middle, and all his insides spilled out.This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that in their own language that field is called Hakeldama( that is, Field of Blood).“ For it is written in the Book of Psalms: Let his dwelling become desolate; let no one live in it; and Let someone else take his position.

For the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers, since they did not recognize Him or the voices of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled their words by condemning Him.Though they found no grounds for the death penalty, they asked Pilate to have Him killed.When they had fulfilled all that had been written about Him, they took Him down from the tree and put Him in a tomb.

Set a wicked person over him; let an accuser stand at his right hand.When he is judged, let him be found guilty, and let his prayer be counted as sin.Let his days be few; let another take over his position.Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.Let his children wander as beggars, searching for food far from their demolished homes.Let a creditor seize all he has; let strangers plunder what he has worked for.Let no one show him kindness, and let no one be gracious to his fatherless children.Let the line of his descendants be cut off; let their name be blotted out in the next generation.Let his ancestors’ guilt be remembered before the Lord, and do not let his mother’s sin be blotted out.Let their sins always remain before the Lord, and let Him erase all memory of them from the earth.For he did not think to show kindness, but pursued the afflicted, poor, and brokenhearted in order to put them to death.He loved cursing— let it fall on him; he took no delight in blessing— let it be far from him.He wore cursing like his coat— let it enter his body like water and go into his bones like oil.Let it be like a robe he wraps around himself, like a belt he always wears.

After arranging a day with him, many came to him at his lodging. From dawn to dusk he expounded and witnessed about the kingdom of God. He tried to persuade them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets.

Though He was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail Him to a cross and kill Him.

to do whatever Your hand and Your plan had predestined to take place.

Sword, awake against My shepherd, against the man who is My associate— this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will also turn My hand against the little ones.

“ Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the house of David and the residents of Jerusalem, and they will look at Me whom they pierced. They will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly for Him as one weeps for a firstborn.

Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.“ I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said.“ What’s that to us?” they said.“ See to it yourself!”So he threw the silver into the sanctuary and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.

So they said to one another,“ Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” They did this to fulfill the Scripture that says: They divided My clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for My clothing. And this is what the soldiers did.

Let death take them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol alive, because evil is in their homes and within them.

The Lord God has opened My ear, and I was not rebellious; I did not turn back.I gave My back to those who beat Me, and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard. I did not hide My face from scorn and spitting.

For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of His bones will be broken.Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the One they pierced.

I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.
