To this day I have had the help that comes from God, and so I stand here testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would come to pass:that the Christ must suffer and that, by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to our people and to the Gentiles.”

“ Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes!

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,

But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”

Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned— every one— to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people?And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed.

While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

And he said to them,“ Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.

And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying,“ This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.”

And he said to them,“ O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said( to fulfill the Scripture),“ I thirst.”

Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck.I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me.I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God.More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore?O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord God of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel.For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face.I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons.For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach.When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me.But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters.Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me.Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress; make haste to answer me.Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies!You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you.Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.

Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully,inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people.All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;“ He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help.Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me;they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast;my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet—I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me;they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.But you, O Lord, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid!Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog!Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him.The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever!All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive.Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.

But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you.

“ Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.”( Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)“ For it is written in the Book of Psalms,“‘ May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’; and“‘ Let another take his office.’

For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him.And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed.And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.

Appoint a wicked man against him; let an accuser stand at his right hand.When he is tried, let him come forth guilty; let his prayer be counted as sin!May his days be few; may another take his office!May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow!May his children wander about and beg, seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit!May the creditor seize all that he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil!Let there be none to extend kindness to him, nor any to pity his fatherless children!May his posterity be cut off; may his name be blotted out in the second generation!May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord, and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out!Let them be before the Lord continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth!For he did not remember to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and the brokenhearted, to put them to death.He loved to curse; let curses come upon him! He did not delight in blessing; may it be far from him!He clothed himself with cursing as his coat; may it soak into his body like water, like oil into his bones!May it be like a garment that he wraps around him, like a belt that he puts on every day!

When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.

this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.

to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.

“ Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me,” declares the Lord of hosts.“ Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the little ones.

“ And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,saying,“ I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said,“ What is that to us? See to it yourself.”And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.

so they said to one another,“ Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,“ They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,

Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.

The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward.I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.

For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled:“ Not one of his bones will be broken.”And again another Scripture says,“ They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
