He was buried in the tomb he had carved out for himself in the City of David. He was laid on a bed perfumed with sweet spices and fragrant ointments, and the people built a huge funeral fire in his honor.
Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body.
Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by the law.But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.
With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes.Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.
