“ If there is a poor person among you, one of your brothers, in any of your towns in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand from your poor brother;but you shall fully open your hand to him, and generously lend him enough for his need in whatever he lacks.Be careful that there is no mean spirited thought in your heart, such as,‘ The seventh year, the year of release of debts, is near,’ and your eye is malicious toward your poor brother, and you give him nothing; then he may cry out to the Lord against you, and it will be a sin in you.You shall generously give to him, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your work, and in all your undertakings.For the poor will not cease to exist in the land; therefore I am commanding you, saying,‘ You shall fully open your hand to your brother, to your needy and poor in your land.’

Let love of the brothers and sisters continue.Do not neglect hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are badly treated, since you yourselves also are in the body.

And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

The stranger has not spent the night outside, For I have opened my doors to the traveler.

Be hospitable to one another without complaint.As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the multifaceted grace of God.

In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha( in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor.About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him,“ Please come at once!”Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. (niv)

The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea. (niv)

But now as for what is inside you— be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. (niv)

Then Jesus said to his host,“ When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,and you will be blessed. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.As it is written:“ They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you.
