“ Then he who had received the one talent came and said,‘ Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed.

And he also that had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou didst not sow, and gathering where thou didst not scatter;

“ Then the man who had received one talent also approached and said,‘ Master, I know you. You’re a difficult man, reaping where you haven’t sown and gathering where you haven’t scattered seed.

Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:

Then another came, saying,‘ Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief;for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’He said to him,‘ I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?

And you, O generation, behold the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say,‘ We are free, we will come no more to you’?

but he answered his father,‘ Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.

“ Not everyone who says to me,‘ Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder,“ Why have you made me like this?”

“ As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not listen to you.But we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we did, both we and our fathers, our kings and our officials, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no disaster.But since we left off making offerings to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.”

For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.

But you profane it when you say that the Lord’s table is polluted, and its fruit, that is, its food may be despised.But you say,‘ What a weariness this is,’ and you snort at it, says the Lord of hosts. You bring what has been taken by violence or is lame or sick, and this you bring as your offering! Shall I accept that from your hand? says the Lord.

‘ Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers.

saying,‘ These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’

“ Yet you say,‘ The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die.Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life.Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die.Yet the house of Israel says,‘ The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?

They say to God,‘ Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of your ways.What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit do we get if we pray to him?’

“ Why do you call me‘ Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?

You have said,‘ It is vain to serve God. What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts?And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’”
