Woe to you Pharisees! You love the best seats in the synagogues and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces!Woe to you! You are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without realizing it!”One of the experts in religious law answered him,“ Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too.”But Jesus replied,“ Woe to you experts in religious law as well! You load people down with burdens difficult to bear, yet you yourselves refuse to touch the burdens with even one of your fingers!Woe to you! You build the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors killed.So you testify that you approve of the deeds of your ancestors, because they killed the prophets and you build their tombs!For this reason also the wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’so that this generation may be held accountable for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world,from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against this generation.Woe to you experts in religious law! You have taken away the key to knowledge! You did not go in yourselves, and you hindered those who were going in.”When he went out from there, the experts in the law and the Pharisees began to oppose him bitterly, and to ask him hostile questions about many things,plotting against him, to catch him in something he might say.

In his teaching Jesus also said,“ Watch out for the experts in the law. They like walking around in long robes and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces,and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.

My brothers and sisters, do not show prejudice if you possess faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.For if someone comes into your assembly wearing a gold ring and fine clothing, and a poor person enters in filthy clothes,do you pay attention to the one who is finely dressed and say,“ You sit here in a good place,” and to the poor person,“ You stand over there,” or“ Sit on the floor”?If so, have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil motives?

When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable:“ When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you,‘ Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you,‘ Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests.For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (niv)

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. (niv)

“ Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.” (niv)

Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence, and do not claim a place among his great men;it is better for him to say to you,“ Come up here,” than for him to humiliate you before his nobles. What you have seen with your eyes (niv)

“ What is it you want?” he asked. She said,“ Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.” (niv)
