Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the seat of honor in the synagogues and personal greetings in the marketplaces.Woe to you! For you are like unseen tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it.”One of the lawyers* said to Him in reply,“ Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us too.”But He said,“ Woe to you lawyers as well! For you load people with burdens that are hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers.Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them.So you are witnesses and you approve of the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs.For this reason also, the wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will persecute,so that the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.’Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”When He left that place, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to interrogate Him about many subjects,plotting against Him to catch Him in something He might say.

And in His teaching He was saying:“ Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like personal greetings in the marketplaces,and seats of honor in the synagogues, and places of honor at banquets,

My brothers and sisters, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism.For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and is dressed in bright clothes, and a poor man in dirty clothes also comes in,and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the bright clothes, and say,“ You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man,“ You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,”have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives?

When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable:“ When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you,‘ Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you,‘ Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests.For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (niv)

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. (niv)

“ Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.” (niv)

Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence, and do not claim a place among his great men;it is better for him to say to you,“ Come up here,” than for him to humiliate you before his nobles. What you have seen with your eyes (niv)

“ What is it you want?” he asked. She said,“ Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.” (niv)
