耶路撒冷乎、嗟爾殘殺先知、石擊天主星使之耶路撒冷乎！吾之欲集爾子女、如牝雞之覆翼其雛者、不已頻乎？而爾終莫之許也。

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

“ Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones in order to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I have wanted to gather your people together. I have wanted to be like a hen who gathers her chicks under her wings. And you would not let me!

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem! She who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, yet you were not willing!

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem,[ thou] that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under[ her] wings, and ye would not!

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!

May the LORD reward your efforts! May your acts of kindness be repaid fully by the LORD God of Israel, from whom you have sought protection!”

Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that hovers over its young, so the LORD spread out his wings and took him, he lifted him up on his pinions.The LORD alone was guiding him, no foreign god was with him.

He will shelter you with his wings; you will find safety under his wings. His faithfulness is like a shield or a protective wall.

Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!Look, your house is forsaken! And I tell you, you will not see me until you say,‘ Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

However, because I called but you refused to listen, because I stretched out my hand but no one paid attention,because you neglected all my advice, and did not comply with my rebuke,so I myself will laugh when disaster strikes you, I will mock when what you dread comes,when what you dread comes like a whirlwind, and disaster strikes you like a devastating storm, when distressing trouble comes on you.Then they will call to me, but I will not answer; they will diligently seek me, but they will not find me.Because they hated moral knowledge, and did not choose to fear the LORD,they did not comply with my advice, they spurned all my rebuke.Therefore they will eat from the fruit of their way, and they will be stuffed full of their own counsel.

For you are my deliverer; under your wings I rejoice.

The LORD said to his people:“ You are standing at the crossroads. So consider your path. Ask where the old, reliable paths are. Ask where the path is that leads to blessing and follow it. If you do, you will find rest for your souls.” But they said,“ We will not follow it!”The LORD said,“ I appointed prophets as watchmen to warn you, saying:‘ Pay attention to the warning sound of the trumpet!’” But they said,“ We will not pay attention!”

How precious is your loyal love, O God! The human race finds shelter under your wings.

Protect me as you would protect the pupil of your eye! Hide me in the shadow of your wings!

“ Nonetheless they grew disobedient and rebelled against you; they disregarded your law. They killed your prophets who had solemnly admonished them in order to cause them to return to you. They committed atrocious blasphemies.

When they have completed their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will make war on them and conquer them and kill them.Their corpses will lie in the street of the great city that is symbolically called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was also crucified.

who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us severely. They are displeasing to God and are opposed to all people,

I sent my servants the prophets to you people over and over again warning you not to do this disgusting thing I hate.

At the time for the banquet he sent his slave to tell those who had been invited,‘ Come, because everything is now ready.’But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first said to him,‘ I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please excuse me.’Another said,‘ I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going out to examine them. Please excuse me.’Another said,‘ I just got married, and I cannot come.’

He sent his slaves to summon those who had been invited to the banquet, but they would not come.

I sent all my servants the prophets to warn you over and over again. They said,“ Every one of you, stop doing the evil things you have been doing and do what is right. Do not pay allegiance to other gods and worship them. Then you can continue to live in this land that I gave to you and your ancestors.” But you did not pay any attention or listen to me.

And you say,‘ If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have participated with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

Then Jeremiah said to them,“ You sent me to the LORD God of Israel to make your request known to him. Here is what he says to you:‘ If you will just stay in this land, I will build you up. I will not tear you down. I will firmly plant you. I will not uproot you. For I am filled with sorrow because of the disaster that I have brought on you.Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon whom you now fear. Do not be afraid of him because I will be with you to save you and to rescue you from his power. I, the LORD, affirm it!I will have compassion on you so that he in turn will have mercy on you and allow you to return to your land.’“ You must not disobey the LORD your God by saying,‘ We will not stay in this land.’

But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying,‘ We do not want this man to be king over us!’When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he summoned these slaves to whom he had given the money. He wanted to know how much they had earned by trading.So the first one came before him and said,‘ Sir, your mina has made ten minas more.’And the king said to him,‘ Well done, good slave! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you will have authority over ten cities.’Then the second one came and said,‘ Sir, your mina has made five minas.’So the king said to him,‘ And you are to be over five cities.’Then another slave came and said,‘ Sir, here is your mina that I put away for safekeeping in a piece of cloth.For I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You withdraw what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.’The king said to him,‘ I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave! So you knew, did you, that I was a severe man, withdrawing what I didn’t deposit and reaping what I didn’t sow?Why then didn’t you put my money in the bank, so that when I returned I could have collected it with interest?’And he said to his attendants,‘ Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has ten.’But they said to him,‘ Sir, he has ten minas already!’‘ I tell you that everyone who has will be given more, but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king, bring them here and slaughter them in front of me!’”After Jesus had said this, he continued on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.Now when he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,telling them,“ Go to the village ahead of you. When you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.If anyone asks you,‘ Why are you untying it?’ just say,‘ The Lord needs it.’”So those who were sent ahead found it exactly as he had told them.As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them,“ Why are you untying that colt?”They replied,“ The Lord needs it.”Then they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and had Jesus get on it.As he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.As he approached the road leading down from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen:“ Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,“ Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”He answered,“ I tell you, if they keep silent, the very stones will cry out!”Now when Jesus approached and saw the city, he wept over it,saying,“ If you had only known on this day, even you, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and surround you and close in on you from every side.They will demolish you– you and your children within your walls– and they will not leave within you one stone on top of another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”

They plotted against him and by royal decree stoned him to death in the courtyard of the LORD’s temple.King Joash disregarded the loyalty his father Jehoiada had shown him and killed Jehoiada’s son. As Zechariah was dying, he said,“ May the LORD take notice and seek vengeance!”

But the tenants seized his slaves, beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again he sent other slaves, more than the first, and they treated them the same way.

The rest seized his slaves, insolently mistreated them, and killed them.

For I solemnly warned your ancestors to obey me. I warned them again and again, ever since I delivered them out of Egypt until this very day.But they did not listen to me or pay any attention to me! Each one of them followed the stubborn inclinations of his own wicked heart. So I brought on them all the punishments threatened in the covenant because they did not carry out its terms as I commanded them to do.’”

I said,‘ Listen, my people! I will warn you! O Israel, if only you would obey me!There must be no other god among you. You must not worship a foreign god.I am the LORD, your God, the one who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it!’But my people did not obey me; Israel did not submit to me.

“ Oh people of Jerusalem, purify your hearts from evil so that you may yet be delivered. How long will you continue to harbor up wicked schemes within you?

Have mercy on me, O God! Have mercy on me! For in you I have taken shelter. In the shadow of your wings I take shelter until trouble passes.

“ You stubborn people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, like your ancestors did!Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold long ago the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become!

My people are obsessed with turning away from me; they call to Baal, but he will never exalt them!

“ It did no good for me to punish your people. They did not respond to such correction. You slaughtered your prophets like a voracious lion.”

and they brought Uriah back from there. They took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him executed and had his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.

The LORD God of their ancestors continually warned them through his messengers, for he felt compassion for his people and his dwelling place.But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his warnings, and ridiculed his prophets. Finally the LORD got very angry at his people and there was no one who could prevent his judgment.

So take warning, Jerusalem, or I will abandon you in disgust and make you desolate, a place where no one can live.”

But the older son became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and appealed to him,

“ Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the former prophets called out, saying,‘ The LORD who rules over all says,“ Turn now from your evil wickedness,”’ but they would by no means obey me,” says the LORD.

So he sent another slave. They beat this one too, treated him outrageously, and sent him away empty- handed.So he sent still a third. They even wounded this one, and threw him out.Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What should I do? I will send my one dear son; perhaps they will respect him.’But when the tenants saw him, they said to one another,‘ This is the heir; let’s kill him so the inheritance will be ours!’

But those tenants seized his slave, beat him, and sent him away empty- handed.So he sent another slave to them again. This one they struck on the head and treated outrageously.He sent another, and that one they killed. This happened to many others, some of whom were beaten, others killed.He had one left, his one dear son. Finally he sent him to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’

Why does no one challenge me when I come? Why does no one respond when I call? Is my hand too weak to deliver you? Do I lack the power to rescue you? Look, with a mere shout I can dry up the sea; I can turn streams into a desert, so the fish rot away and die from lack of water.

But the more I summoned them, the farther they departed from me. They sacrificed to the Baal idols and burned incense to images.

“ For the last twenty-three years, from the thirteenth year that Josiah son of Amon was ruling in Judah until now, the LORD has been speaking to me. I told you over and over again what he said. But you would not listen.Over and over again the LORD has sent his servants the prophets to you. But you have not listened or paid attention.He said through them,‘ Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and stop doing the evil things you are doing. If you do, I will allow you to continue to live here in the land that I gave to you and your ancestors as a lasting possession.Do not pay allegiance to other gods and worship and serve them. Do not make me angry by the things that you do. Then I will not cause you any harm.’So, now the LORD says,‘ You have not listened to me. But you have made me angry by the things that you have done. Thus you have brought harm on yourselves.’

I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints and the blood of those who testified to Jesus. I was greatly astounded when I saw her.
