“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

“ Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones in order to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I have wanted to gather your people together. I have wanted to be like a hen who gathers her chicks under her wings. And you would not let me!

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem! She who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, yet you were not willing!

May the Lord reward your work, and may your wages be full from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

As an eagle stirs up its nest, And hovers over its young, He spread His wings, He caught them, He carried them on His pinions.The Lord alone guided him, And there was no foreign god with him.

He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may take refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and wall.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in this same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her young under her wings, and you were unwilling!Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until you say,‘ Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”

Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;And you neglected all my advice And did not want my rebuke;I will also laugh at your disaster; I will mock when your dread comes,When your dread comes like a storm And your disaster comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you.Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently but will not find me,Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the Lord.They did not accept my advice, They disdainfully rejected every rebuke from me.So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own schemes.

For You have been my help, And in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.

This is what the Lord says:“ Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; Then you will find a resting place for your souls. But they said,‘ We will not walk in it.’And I set watchmen over you, saying,‘ Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said,‘ We will not listen.’

How precious is Your mercy, God! And the sons of mankind take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.

Keep me as the apple of the eye; Hide me in the shadow of Your wings

“ But they became rebellious and revolted against You, And threw Your Law behind their backs And killed Your prophets who had admonished them In order to bring them back to You, And they committed great blasphemies.

When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill them.And their dead bodies will lie on the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out. They are not pleasing to God, but hostile to all people,

Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets again and again, saying,“ Oh, do not do this abominable thing which I hate.”

and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to tell those who had been invited,‘ Come, because everything is ready now.’And yet they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him,‘ I purchased a field and I need to go out to look at it; please consider me excused.’And another one said,‘ I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused.’And another one said,‘ I took a woman as my wife, and for that reason I cannot come.’

And he sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come.

Also I have sent to you all My servants the prophets, sending them again and again, saying:‘ Turn now every person from his evil way and amend your deeds, and do not follow other gods to worship them. Then you will live in the land which I have given to you and to your forefathers; but you have not inclined your ear or listened to Me.

and you say,‘ If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

and said to them,“ This is what the Lord says, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your plea before Him:‘ If you will indeed stay in this land, then I will build you up and not tear you down, and I will plant you and not uproot you; for I will relent of the disaster that I have inflicted on you.Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you are now fearing; do not be afraid of him,’ declares the Lord,‘ for I am with you to save you and rescue you from his hand.I will also show you compassion, so that he will have compassion on you and restore you to your own soil.But if you are going to say,“ We will not stay in this land,” so as not to listen to the voice of the Lord your God,

But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying,‘ We do not want this man to reign over us.’When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be summoned to him so that he would learn how much they had made by the business they had done.The first slave appeared, saying,‘ Master, your mina has made ten minas more.’And he said to him,‘ Well done, good slave; since you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to have authority over ten cities.’The second one came, saying,‘ Your mina, master, has made five minas.’And he said to him also,‘ And you are to be over five cities.’And then another came, saying,‘ Master, here is your mina, which I kept tucked away in a handkerchief;for I was afraid of you, because you are a demanding man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.’He* said to him,‘ From your own lips I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am a demanding man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow?And so why did you not put my money in the bank, and when I came back, I would have collected it with interest?’And then he said to the other slaves who were present,‘ Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’And they said to him,‘ Master, he already has ten minas.’‘ I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them in my presence.’ ”After Jesus said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.When He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mountain that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples,saying,“ Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.And if anyone asks you,‘ Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this:‘ The Lord has need of it.’ ”So those who were sent left and found it just as He had told them.And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them,“ Why are you untying the colt?”They said,“ The Lord has need of it.”And they brought it to Jesus, and they threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.Now as He was going, they were spreading their cloaks on the road.And as soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen,shouting:“ Blessed is the King, the One who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”And yet some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him,“ Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!”Jesus replied,“ I tell you, if these stop speaking, the stones will cry out!”When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,saying,“ If you had known on this day, even you, the conditions for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.For the days will come upon you when your enemies will put up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side,and they will level you to the ground, and throw down your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

So they conspired against him, and at the command of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the house of the Lord.So Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had shown him, but he murdered his son. And as Zechariah died he said,“ May the Lord see and avenge!”

And the vine growers took his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they did the same things to them.

and the rest seized his slaves and treated them abusively, and then killed them.

For I solemnly warned your fathers on the day I brought them up from the land of Egypt, even to this day, warning them persistently, saying,“ Listen to My voice.”Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in the stubbornness of their evil heart, each one of them; therefore I brought on them all the words of this covenant which I commanded them to do, but they did not.’ ”

Hear, My people, and I will admonish you; Israel, if you would listen to Me!There shall be no strange god among you; Nor shall you worship a foreign god.I, the Lord, am your God, Who brought you up from the land of Egypt; Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.“ But My people did not listen to My voice, And Israel did not obey Me.

Wash your heart from evil, Jerusalem, So that you may be saved. How long will your wicked thoughts Lodge within you?

Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, For my soul takes refuge in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge Until destruction passes by.

“ You men who are stiff necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, and you have now become betrayers and murderers of Him;

So My people are determined to turn from Me. Though they call them to the One on high, None at all exalts Him.

“ In vain I have struck your sons; They did not accept discipline. Your sword has devoured your prophets Like a destroying lion.

And they brought Uriah from Egypt and led him to King Jehoiakim, who killed him with a sword and threw his dead body into the burial place of the common people.

Yet the Lord, the God of their fathers, sent word to them again and again by His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place;but they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose against His people, until there was no remedy.

Be warned, Jerusalem, Or I shall be alienated from you, And make you a desolation, An uninhabited land.”

But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him.

“ Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying,‘ This is what the Lord of armies says:“ Return now from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.” ’ But they did not listen or pay attention to Me,” declares the Lord.

And he proceeded to send another slave; but they beat him also and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty handed.And he proceeded to send a third; but this one too they wounded and threw out.Now the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What am I to do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’But when the vine growers saw him, they discussed with one another, saying,‘ This is the heir; let’s kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’

And they took him, and beat him, and sent him away empty handed.And again he sent them another slave, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully.And he sent another, and that one they killed; and so with many others, beating some and killing others.He had one more man to send, a beloved son; he sent him to them last of all, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’

Why was there no one when I came? When I called, why was there no one to answer? Is My hand so short that it cannot redeem? Or do I have no power to rescue? Behold, I dry up the sea with My rebuke, I turn rivers into a wilderness; Their fish stink for lack of water, And die of thirst.

The more they called them, The more they went away from them; They kept sacrificing to the Baals And burning incense to idols.

“ From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, these twenty three years the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened.And the Lord has sent to you all His servants the prophets again and again, but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear,saying,‘ Turn now, everyone from his evil way and from the evil of your deeds, and live on the land which the Lord has given to you and your forefathers forever and ever;and do not follow other gods to serve them and to worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands, then I will do you no harm.’Yet you have not listened to Me,” declares the Lord,“ in order to provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.

And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her, I wondered greatly.
