“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

“ Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones in order to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I have wanted to gather your people together. I have wanted to be like a hen who gathers her chicks under her wings. And you would not let me!

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem! She who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, yet you were not willing!

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem,[ thou] that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under[ her] wings, and ye would not!

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!

May the LORD reward you for what you have done, and may you receive a full reward from the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.”

He watches over his nest like an eagle and hovers over his young; he spreads his wings, catches him, and carries him on his feathers.The LORD alone led him, with no help from a foreign god.

He will cover you with his feathers; you will take refuge under his wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield.

Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!See, your house is abandoned to you. I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say,‘ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’!”

Since I called out and you refused, extended my hand and no one paid attention,since you neglected all my counsel and did not accept my correction,I, in turn, will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when terror strikes you,when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when trouble and stress overcome you.Then they will call me, but I won’t answer; they will search for me, but won’t find me.Because they hated knowledge, didn’t choose to fear the LORD,were not interested in my counsel, and rejected all my correction,they will eat the fruit of their way and be glutted with their own schemes.

because you are my helper; I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings.

This is what the LORD says: Stand by the roadways and look. Ask about the ancient paths,“ Which is the way to what is good?” Then take it and find rest for yourselves. But they protested,“ We won’t!”I appointed watchmen over you and said,“ Listen for the sound of the ram’s horn.” But they protested,“ We won’t listen!”

How priceless your faithful love is, God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

Protect me as the pupil of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings

But they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They flung your law behind their backs and killed your prophets who warned them in order to turn them back to you. They committed terrible blasphemies.

When they finish their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war on them, conquer them, and kill them.Their dead bodies will lie in the main street of the great city, which figuratively is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us. They displease God and are hostile to everyone,

So I sent you all my servants the prophets time and time again, saying,‘ Don’t commit this detestable action that I hate.’

At the time of the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who were invited,‘ Come, because everything is now ready.’“ But without exception they all began to make excuses. The first one said to him,‘ I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. I ask you to excuse me.’“ Another said,‘ I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m going to try them out. I ask you to excuse me.’“ And another said,‘ I just got married, and therefore I’m unable to come.’

He sent his servants to summon those invited to the banquet, but they didn’t want to come.

Time and time again I have sent you all my servants the prophets, proclaiming,“ Turn, each one from his evil way, and correct your actions. Stop following other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I gave you and your ancestors.” But you did not pay attention or obey me.

and you say,‘ If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we wouldn’t have taken part with them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’

He said to them,“ This is what the LORD says, the God of Israel to whom you sent me to bring your petition before him:‘ If you will indeed stay in this land, then I will rebuild and not demolish you, and I will plant and not uproot you, because I relent concerning the disaster that I have brought on you.Don’t be afraid of the king of Babylon whom you now fear; don’t be afraid of him’— this is the LORD’s declaration—‘ because I am with you to save you and rescue you from him.I will grant you compassion, and he will have compassion on you and allow you to return to your own soil.’“ But if you say,‘ We will not stay in this land,’ in order to disobey the LORD your God,

“ But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying,‘ We don’t want this man to rule over us.’“ At his return, having received the authority to be king, he summoned those servants he had given the money to, so that he could find out how much they had made in business.The first came forward and said,‘ Master, your mina has earned ten more minas.’“‘ Well done, good servant!’ he told him.‘ Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, have authority over ten towns.’“ The second came and said,‘ Master, your mina has made five minas.’“ So he said to him,‘ You will be over five towns.’“ And another came and said,‘ Master, here is your mina. I have kept it safe in a clothbecause I was afraid of you since you’re a harsh man: you collect what you didn’t deposit and reap what you didn’t sow.’“ He told him,‘ I will condemn you by what you have said, you evil servant! If you knew I was a harsh man, collecting what I didn’t deposit and reaping what I didn’t sow,why, then, didn’t you put my money in the bank? And when I returned, I would have collected it with interest.’So he said to those standing there,‘ Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’“ But they said to him,‘ Master, he has ten minas.’“‘ I tell you, that to everyone who has, more will be given; and from the one who does not have, even what he does have will be taken away.But bring here these enemies of mine, who did not want me to rule over them, and slaughter them in my presence.’”When he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.As he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciplesand said,“ Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.If anyone asks you,‘ Why are you untying it?’ say this:‘ The Lord needs it.’”So those who were sent left and found it just as he had told them.As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them,“ Why are you untying the colt?”“ The Lord needs it,” they said.Then they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their clothes on the colt, they helped Jesus get on it.As he was going along, they were spreading their clothes on the road.Now he came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven!Some of the Pharisees from the crowd told him,“ Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”He answered,“ I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out.”As he approached and saw the city, he wept for it,saying,“ If you knew this day what would bring peace— but now it is hidden from your eyes.For the days will come on you when your enemies will build a barricade around you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.They will crush you and your children among you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in your midst, because you did not recognize the time when God visited you.”

But they conspired against him and stoned him at the king’s command in the courtyard of the LORD’s temple.King Joash didn’t remember the kindness that Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had extended to him, but killed his son. While he was dying, he said,“ May the LORD see and demand an account.”

The farmers took his servants, beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.Again, he sent other servants, more than the first group, and they did the same to them.

while the rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.

For I strongly warned your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt until today, warning them time and time again,‘ Obey me.’Yet they would not obey or pay attention; each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant, because they had not done what I commanded them to do.”

Listen, my people, and I will admonish you. Israel, if you would only listen to me!There must not be a strange god among you; you must not bow down to a foreign god.I am the LORD your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.“ But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel did not obey me.

Wash the evil from your heart, Jerusalem, so that you will be delivered. How long will you harbor malicious thoughts?

Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, for I take refuge in you. I will seek refuge in the shadow of your wings until danger passes.

“ You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit. As your ancestors did, you do also.Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.

My people are bent on turning from me. Though they call to him on high, he will not exalt them at all.

I have struck down your children in vain; they would not accept discipline. Your own sword has devoured your prophets like a ravaging lion.

They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who executed him with the sword and threw his corpse into the burial place of the common people.

But the LORD, the God of their ancestors sent word against them by the hand of his messengers, sending them time and time again, for he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place.But they kept ridiculing God’s messengers, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets, until the LORD’s wrath was so stirred up against his people that there was no remedy.

Be warned, Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you; I will make you a desolation, a land without inhabitants.

“ Then he became angry and didn’t want to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him.

Do not be like your ancestors; the earlier prophets proclaimed to them: This is what the LORD of Armies says: Turn from your evil ways and your evil deeds. But they did not listen or pay attention to me— this is the LORD’s declaration.

He sent yet another servant, but they beat that one too, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.And he sent yet a third, but they wounded this one too and threw him out.“ Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What should I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.’“ But when the tenant farmers saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said,‘ This is the heir. Let’s kill him, so that the inheritance will be ours.’

But they took him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.Again he sent another servant to them, and they hit him on the head and treated him shamefully.Then he sent another, and they killed that one. He also sent many others; some they beat, and others they killed.He still had one to send, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’

Why was no one there when I came? Why was there no one to answer when I called? Is my arm too weak to redeem? Or do I have no power to rescue? Look, I dry up the sea by my rebuke; I turn the rivers into a wilderness; their fish rot because of lack of water and die of thirst.

Israel called to the Egyptians even as Israel was leaving them. They kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning offerings to idols.

“ From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, until this very day— twenty-three years— the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken to you time and time again, but you have not obeyed.The LORD sent all his servants the prophets to you time and time again, but you have not obeyed or even paid attention.He announced,‘ Turn, each of you, from your evil way of life and from your evil deeds. Live in the land the LORD gave to you and your ancestors long ago and forever.Do not follow other gods to serve them and to bow in worship to them, and do not anger me by the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.“‘ But you have not obeyed me’— this is the LORD’s declaration—‘ with the result that you have angered me by the work of your hands and brought disaster on yourselves.’

Then I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the witnesses to Jesus. When I saw her, I was greatly astonished.
