They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said,“ All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!”Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman.

This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.

Why was no one there when I came? Why didn’t anyone answer when I called? Is it because I have no power to rescue? No, that is not the reason! For I can speak to the sea and make it dry up! Let them appear!See, the Sovereign Lord is on my side! Who will declare me guilty? All my enemies will be destroyed like old clothes that have been eaten by moths!

But since they could see the man who had been healed standing right there among them, there was nothing the council could say.

So they finally replied,“ We don’t know.” And Jesus responded,“ Then I won’t tell you by what authority I do these things.

You sit there baffled, with nothing more to say.Should I continue to wait, now that you are silent? Must I also remain silent?
