One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening to the debate. He realized that Jesus had answered well, so he asked,“ Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”Jesus replied,“ The most important commandment is this:‘ Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord.And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’The second is equally important:‘ Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”The teacher of religious law replied,“ Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth by saying that there is only one God and no other.And I know it is important to love him with all my heart and all my understanding and all my strength, and to love my neighbor as myself. This is more important than to offer all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law.”

“ What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore justice and the love of God. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.

So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.“ But I warn you— unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!

“ What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law— justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.Blind guides! You strain your water so you won’t accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel!

In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.

Even though I gave them all my laws, they act as if those laws don’t apply to them.
