But the Pharisees went out and conspired against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.

For when the foolish took their lamps, they did not take extra oil with them;but the prudent ones took oil in flasks with their lamps.Now while the groom was delaying, they all became drowsy and began to sleep.

Now when the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what would come of this.But someone came and reported to them,“ The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple area and teaching the people!”Then the captain went along with the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence( for they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).When they had brought them, they had them stand before the Council. The high priest interrogated them,saying,“ We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this Man’s blood upon us.”

crying out,“ Men of Israel, help! This is the man who instructs everyone everywhere against our people and the Law and this place; and besides, he has even brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place!”For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him, and they thought that Paul had brought him into the temple.Then the whole city was provoked and the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut.

About that time a major disturbance occurred in regard to the Way.For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing considerable business to the craftsmen;he gathered these men together with the workmen of similar trades, and said,“ Men, you know that our prosperity depends upon this business.You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made by hands are not gods at all.Not only is there danger that this trade of ours will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be regarded as worthless, and that she whom all of Asia and the world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence.”When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began shouting, saying,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council meeting, and they were saying,“ What are we doing in regard to the fact that this man is performing many signs?If we let Him go on like this, all the people will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take over both our place and our nation.”But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them,“ You know nothing at all,nor are you taking into account that it is in your best interest that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish instead.”
