When the foolish took their lamps, they didn’t take olive oil with them.But the sensible ones took oil in their flasks with their lamps.Since the groom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

As the commander of the temple police and the chief priests heard these things, they were baffled about them, as to what could come of this.Someone came and reported to them,“ Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple complex and teaching the people.”Then the commander went with the temple police and brought them in without force, because they were afraid the people might stone them.After they brought them in, they had them stand before the Sanhedrin, and the high priest asked,“ Didn’t we strictly order you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to bring this man’s blood on us!”

shouting,“ Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people, our law, and this place. What’s more, he also brought Greeks into the temple and has profaned this holy place.”For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple complex.The whole city was stirred up, and the people rushed together. They seized Paul, dragged him out of the temple complex, and at once the gates were shut.

During that time there was a major disturbance about the Way.For a person named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, provided a great deal of business for the craftsmen.When he had assembled them, as well as the workers engaged in this type of business, he said:“ Men, you know that our prosperity is derived from this business.You both see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this man Paul has persuaded and misled a considerable number of people by saying that gods made by hand are not gods!So not only do we run a risk that our business may be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be despised and her magnificence come to the verge of ruin— the very one all of Asia and the world adore.”When they had heard this, they were filled with rage and began to cry out,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said,“ What are we going to do since this man does many signs?If we let Him continue in this way, everyone will believe in Him! Then the Romans will come and remove both our place and our nation.”One of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them,“ You know nothing at all!You’re not considering that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish.”
